Meet in the Middle (Sresti u Sredini)

Meet in the Middle (Sresti u Sredini) documents contemporary Bosnia and Herzegovina and the ways in which it is left fragmented by and tethered to its past. Although thirty years have passed since the Yugoslav wars, this nation continues to face seemingly never-ending political, religious and ethnic tensions.
The history of Bosnia and Herzegovina is complex, still unfolding and often overlooked. Western audiences are used to seeing the photographs taken amidst the war or directly after. This series examines what remains long after the world has looked away. It is not just about Bosnia and Herzegovina, but about the human condition and the ways in which this nation’s inhabitants carry on and seek to persist, without the guarantee of ever being whole.
There is a dissonance surrounding these images that I also felt while photographing. I do not belong to this place and I do not speak the language. My relation to this country is shaped by both proximity and distance. My camera is my point of entry. It allows me to explore, connect to and linger while also being an observer.
As a Canadian-Croatian, with most of the paternal side of my family residing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, I recognize myself as both an insider and an outsider; welcomed into private spaces but never quite feeling like I should be there. I find myself extremely aware of the history, the grief that lingers and the questions that may always be left unanswered. This series emerges from these tensions. Rather than seeking resolution, it invites reflection on an impossible place.
