Description:
This 9 week course is a super fun introduction to appreciating and making art. Students will learn to think of art as a verb instead of a noun, through placing emphasis on the proc
ess of making art instead of the final product. This shift of focus to the journey instead of the destination enables the students to develop confidence in finding their own expression. They will be better equipped to create original concepts, and develop a more open mind to the potential of art. By focusing on the active journey of art, they will learn that as artists they must be active people. The course includes the following workshops:
Week 1: Cupcake Action Painting
This amazing class kicks of the course with a messy and delicious lesson: art doesn't have to be in a frame and it doesn't have to match your couch to be art! Using fundamentals inspired by Jackson Pollack, the kids learn how body movement effects painting style, and they get to eat the results too! Week 2-4: Textile Arts
Next the kids will learn how to create their own acid dyes, how to create a soap felted tapestry, and how to sew. As per the focus of this course: the journey of art, the kids will learn that time is a huge factor of this journey. They will learn how time effects the colours of their dye, the texture of their tapestry, and the personality of their stitching. They will learn to be aware of and consider the effects of slow process compared to a fast process, and know when to be patient and when to be quick! Week 5-9: Puppet Making
Starting with a story, the children each choose characters and focus on something unique about the character to portray. Then they design, build and decorate puppets based on their character. In this workshop the children learn how important it is to choose something to say about your subject before making, it in order to create something that really feels alive! If time permits, we will be performing a puppet show!
