An internationally renowned centre for contemporary art and interdisciplinary inquiry in the University of Toronto's St George campus.

Free admission and all are welcome! The Art Museum is comprised of the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (Hart House) and the University of Toronto Art Centre (University College). Located just a few steps apart, the two galleries were federated in 2014 and began operating under a new visual identity as the Art Museum at the University of Toronto, one of the largest gallery spaces for visual art exhibitions and programming in Toronto. Next weekend, get to know artist Abbas Akhavan through an interactive talk co-presented by the Art Museum, Hart House, and the Hart House Student Art Committee.

Abbas will discuss his work in recent exhibitions and his personal artistic trajectory, touching on his experience representing Canada at the Venice Biennale, his practice of making ephemeral art, and how he navigates the challenges of being an artist. The talk will be followed by an in-depth group discussion with the participants.

The talk is free and open to the public. Registration recommended.

Abbas Akhavan’s (b. 1977, Tehran; lives/works: Montreal and Berlin) practice ranges from site-specific ephemeral installations to drawing, video, sculpture and performance. The direction of his research is influenced by his engagement with the places in which he works—their histories and architectures, as well as the economies and inhabitants that shape them. The garden—and by extension, the spaces and species just outside the home, such as backyards, public parks and other domesticated landscapes—has been a foundational and recurring subject in his work.

See a new commission from a celebrated artist emphasizing the life-sustaining nature of waterways.

Bonnie Devine’s new paintings respond to rupture and water by mapping the geographical relationship between the Great Lakes of North America and international waterways.

Likening bodies of water to organic bodies, Bonnie examines points of contestation, obstruction, and critical sensitivities that are currently manifesting in global transport and trade relations. The paintings represent global maritime routes as circulatory systems, with these choke points as the vital channels that support (or endanger) life.

On view in the University of Toronto Art Centre through December 20, 2026.

Bonnie Devine is a Toronto-based installation artist, writer, and educator whose work reflects a preoccupation with land and stories. Rejecting the picturesque vernacular of traditional landscape painting, Devine attempts a crafted response to the land that is grounded in touch, memory, curiosity, and listening. Her work is influenced by the legacy of ancestors and artists who came before her, the Anishinaabek, who made images with the same intention as other cultures made tools.

Join us for a curatorial tour of 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 as the concluding program of 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘈𝘯 𝘈𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭, 𝘈 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘈 𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦.

Presented by the Toronto Biennial of Art in partnership with the Art Museum, the 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 brings together artists, Elders, musicians, growers, knowledge holders, and communities through dialogue, performance, shared meals, and moments of collectivity.

Taking place across three days and on sites throughout Toronto, the 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 engages with six new artist commissions and invites audiences into a range of gatherings, performances, conversations, and shared experiences.

All programs are free, but registration is required in order to attend.

On September 26, the Art Museum was honoured to welcome so many visitors to the University of Toronto for the opening day of the Toronto Biennial of Art!

The opening of 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 was commemorated by special programming: thank you to Rebecca Belmore and Raphaël Barontini for marking the occasion with your performances of 𝘎𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘪 and 𝘒𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘸𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘣è𝘵é, and to Julie Dzerowicz, MP of Davenport, for joining us for opening remarks!

And a huge congratulations to curator Allison Glenn on her incredible exhibition, and the entire TBA team for bringing it together!

Join us this weekend for extended hours and a special suite of programs inaugurating the public opening of the fourth edition of the Toronto Biennial of Art, 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵!

On Saturday, Biennial programming kicks off at 12pm with Rebecca Belmore’s new work, 𝘎𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘪, a procession that moves from Queen’s Park to the University of Toronto Art Centre.

At 1:30pm, opening remarks will be delivered by TBA’s Executive Director, Patrizia Libralato; Curator, Allison Glenn; and Executive Director/Chief Curator of the Art Museum at the University of Toronto, Barbara Fischer.

Lastly, at 2pm, Raphaël Barontini leads a celebratory, carnival-style street parade that honours historical figures of anti-enslavement resistance while celebrating contemporary Caribbean traditions of emancipation.

And to mark the occasion, the Art Museum will offer special extended hours on Saturday, September 26, from 11am–5pm and on Sunday, September 27, from 12pm–5pm.

There’s just two weeks until the opening of 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵, the fourth edition of the Toronto Biennial of Art. Swipe through the carousel for your first peek at some of the exciting works on view at the Art Museum!

Curated by Allison Glenn, 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 brings together artists whose practices engage rupture as a generative force, reconsidering histories, geographies, and systems that shape contemporary life while proposing new ways of understanding the present.

As the main exhibition site partner of the Biennial’s fourth edition, the Art Museum will present works by over 20 artists across both our gallery spaces.
