PR IMPORTANT CANADIAN INTEREST SILVER COVERED URNS

Lot 1080: A pair of English George III sterling silver covered urns of historical importance. The Routh cups were made in London in 1806 by Joseph Hardy. Chased with an acanthus leaf design and double snake handles, the lids are capped by a hounds head in a crenellated battlement. The cups have significant historical interest for Newfoundland. They were given by subscription in honor of Richard Routh who was Chief Justice and collector of his Majesty’s Customs in Newfoundland. Routh was a Loyalist who left Boston and settled in Newfoundland, eventually worked his way to the high office of Chief justice. He was lost at sea in 1801. The subscribers of the cups included the then Governor of Newfoundland, Vice Admiral Sir Erasmus Gower, as well as many other distinguished Newfoundlanders. The cups come with their original fitted cases.

Combined weight 6192 grams
Height 16.5 in 42 cm
