๐พ๐Join us for our opening reception this Saturday 6-10pm! ๐๐งต
The Lost & Found will be open May 30 for the opening reception of material disobedience, Openworkโs exhibition! Grab some refreshments by and meet the amazing artists โ Thรฉo Bignon (), Molly JF Caldwell (), Lux Gow-Habrich (.sparkledust) and Hea R. Kim ().
Rhinestones, beads, crystals, embroidery, textiles, and ceramics have all been variously perceived as symbols of โexcessiveโ cultures or lifestyles, an association that has served to reinforce creative hierarchies and trivialize marginalized identities. From sequined embroideries that immortalize gay cruising spots, tongue-in-cheek textiles exalting vilified reality stars, fantastical recreations of ancient Chinese accessories, and surreal ceramic creatures crusted in pom-poms and beads, material disobedience challenges the stigma of "excess" and translates it into creative inspiration and radically decadent possibilities. Curated by Madeline Collins ().
This exhibition and programming is a part of Openwork, an artist-led intitative by TLAF Collective () to encourage new voices, diversity, and critical engagement in the field of experimental craft and material-based practice. material disobedience is generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council. The panel discussion is hosted by Harbourfront Centre, and we would like to acknowledge the incredible support of artverb* ()
