Métis Week is celebrated in November, either surrounding or leading up to the 16th. November 16th marks the anniversary of Louis Riel’s ex*****on in 1885, and the day commemorates his life and work for the Métis people.
Métis week honours and celebrates the heritage, culture, and languages of the people, who are also referred to as. Mitchif, the most commonly-spoken Métis language.
This language is a unique blend of Cree verbs and French nouns. Partly thanks to Riel’s fight, there is still a significant number of speakers in Canada today.

In collaboration with the University of Toronto, the Canadian Language Museum celebrated the launch of Dr. Ai Taniguchi's L'IMAGE Project (Language, Identity, Multiculturalism and Global Empowerment) on Saturday, November 2nd. The afternoon inspired a conversation about multilingualism, the importance of heritage languages in society, and, of course, the art of comics!

Thank you to all our guests and board members, in particular Dr. Ian Martin, Board Chair, and Dr. Ai Taniguchi and her team, who made this event possible.

This exhibit will be in our gallery until Wednesday, December 4th, 2024. We hope you visit soon!
