📍 Palazzo Cavanis
👀 Ewa Juszkiewicz
🎨 Locks with Leaves and Swelling Buds
Exhibition on view until Sept 2024

Almine Rech press release extract:
By covering the face of historical portraits, Juszkiewicz challenges the very essence of this genre: she destroys the portrait as such. Her paintings are no longer portraits of anyone in particular, but representations of the condition of women under patriarchy. And, as she points out, at the heart of the intervened portrait she drives the stake of another genre: the still life, to which belong the fabrics, flowers, fruits, and other objects the artist uses as masks, subverting the traditional hierarchy of genres and the culture/nature dichotomy.

📍 The Canadian Pavilion
🎨 Kapwani Kiwanga
👀 TRINKET

From the press release:
Kapwani Kiwanga is a multi-disciplinary artist who considers how diverse forms of power are manifested, how the histories they suppress are often overlooked, and their impact on everyday life. Her works function as experiential archives that offer temporary ruptures in established conventions, allowing audiences to both experience and imagine alternative ways of relating and being.

With Trinket, Kiwanga transforms the Canada Pavilion by way of a site-specific sculptural installation. She invites visitors into an immersive environment through an ambitious intervention on the building’s interior and exterior. Viewed from its facade, the building becomes a large-scale tableau where distinctions between inside and outside dissolve through transparency, layering, and transgressing of the building’s original boundaries.

Gaze Paintings by Vickie Vainionpää.
“What does it mean to look at a painting? This is the central question explored by Vickie Vainionpää in her latest body of work, Gaze Paintings, in which she reflects on the historical implications of the gaze. Vainionpää has developed a distinct visual language of forms that are recognizably organic and bodily while simultaneously digital and abstract, generated first through custom-built 3D modeling software and finally rendered in oil paint on canvas. For the works in Gaze Paintings, Vainionpää has added an additional step to her generative process: using herself as the tool, and her own gaze as the subject as she engaged with canonical works of art.”

About the exhibition:
The Broadbent Sisters’ latest body of work is largely created with Royal Blue archival ink on board, as well as paintings on canvas finished with the blue ink. The monochrome palette might recall Picasso’s Blue Period, and as with Picasso, The Sisters have created work that is a direct response to the upheavals of the age. They subtly juxtapose the social with the satirical, and the political with the playful. The tension that arises from these pairings are part of a broader motif that they call “complementary opposites.”
While restraining themselves to create work in just one colour, they realized that blue in fact provides a whole universe of tones, from the blackest blue at the bottom of the sea, to the lightest blue of the morning sky and everything in between. Regardless of the subject matter, The Sisters rely on blue for the soothing and calming quality that it adds to their visual language.
In the body of work presented in this exhibition, Current Sea, the viewer will recognize a visual language that borrows from and transforms the subject matter and motifs of contemporaries like Matthew Barney and Gilbert & George, as well as predecessors like Francisco Goya, Henri Matisse and Georgia O’Keefe.
