This weekend Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior's VIP Artist in Residence, singer-songwriter Tony Dekker of the twice Juno-nominated band Great Lake Swimmers delivered a positively magical plein air acoustic performance at Porphyry Island. He spent a week on the island, staying in the lightkeepers' residence and wrote 6 songs during his stay.

"To have a length of quiet time, solitude, and space to think, disconnect, and be off the grid is a rare thing in our fast-paced world these days. So being on Porphyry was truly a gift and one I hope to put to good use. I wish I could stay another week".

The audience of the sold-out intimate show was treated to world-debuts of two of the hot-off-the press compositions, including one that was completed just hours before the show. A flock of cedar waxwings joined the performance as impromptu back-up singers!

An aerial look at Porphyry Point Light Station, Ontario, Canada which is located along the north shore of Lake Superior. The site is managed by the non-profit group Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior (CLLS). CLLS is involved in the restoration, preservation, maintenance and promotion of lighthouses on the north shore of Lake Superior. The group currently provides the public with access to the lights at Porphyry Point, Island No. 10 (Shaganash) and Trowbridge Island Lighthouses. The magnificent setting of Trowbridge Island Light, Ontario, Canada on Lake Superior. Established on the summit of the island in 1924, the light remains an active aid to navigation serviced by the Canadian Coast Guard. Overall maintenance of the site was leased to the non-profit group Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior (www.clls.ca) in 2016. Happy National Lighthouse Day!

Our friend Captain Ron of the vessel Steel Away has been sending us photos of his adventures on Lake Superior this summer. Check out his stunning photos of #10 lighthouse on Shaganash Island, Caribou Island Lighthouse, Battle Island Lighthouse, Otter Island Lighthouse, and its twin (with the same beaver weathervane!) at the Slate Islands.

Of the Caribou light, Captain Ron writes, "Caribou Light is colossal. At 103 ft it's the tallest light on the lake. Porphyry light is around 48 steps to the top, Caribou would be 200 ... gasp...gasp. It was built in 1903"

Lighthouses are an important part of our maritime history. Hats off to all the organizations, staff, and volunteers who work so hard to keep them standing and available for the public to experience!
