Teslin in the 1930s: What's happening here?
Most everything about this photo is unknown. Except, we do know it's at the old Nisutlin Trading Post down on the bay.
Everyone is well dressed but no one seems happy. In fact the little girl in the centre may be crying. Are they waiting for a float plane or the paddle wheeler? Is this a hospital visit or are they off to residential school...
But this is just speculation.
In any event, all help in identifying these individuals would be much appreciated...

Meet Teslin folk artist Patrick Ryan....
Some thirteen years ago, Patrick carved this replica of George's famous Chevrolet and gifted it to the GJM.
This past Wednesday we were finally able to photograph Patrick (flanked by museum interpreters Judy and Jema) and his wonderful work of art.

Its October 26 1956 and the 50th anniversary of St Philips Church in Teslin...
On the left you can see Bishop Tom Greenwood and Teslin's Reverend Fred Lapham. It's a bit blurry... but can you name anyone else?
It was also the dedication of St Philips new sanctuary and the baptism of Margaret-Anne Lapham…

The end of the Teslin Inn....
Ray Hyde's Teslin Inn burned to the ground on October 25, 1956. This long ago motel was located in the area of Frank Saligo's garage... across from the Teslin Rec Plex.
There are short references to the establishment in the 1949 thru 1956 Mile Post. But we know little else.
Mrs. Lapham, a witness to the fire, says the building was totally destroyed within two hours. The lake was frozen and there was no water available... There was a fear the fire would spread. Fortunately... it did not.
Does anyone have memories of this Inn? Does anyone have photos? As always all help is greatly appreciated.

Two old friends on the good ship "Grayling"...
Photographed somewhere near the head of the Teslin River during the early part of the last century. I can see packs and pails under the bow. The gentleman, partially hidden on the lower right, is wearing moccasins. Am not sure if the old guy is or not...
But the dog looks pretty content...
Sadly the photographer and the exact year is unknown.

We’re closing early today….
The George Johnston Museum, because of the planned power outage, will be closed at 3 o’clock today. Sigh.

Do you know this gentleman...
He has popped up in two, pre-war, post cards connected with Teslin. We don't believe he is Tlingit... but linked to professional hunting in the Teslin/Ross River region.
"Sloppy" seems more like a demeaning nick-name (found on both post cards) foisted on this hunter. The GJM would like to have him properly named...

Two Historic Bridges…
A rare photo from 1943 (but possibly late ’42) showing both the old trestle and new steel bridge on Teslin River. Built by the American Army Corps of Engineers… it is only one of three permanent steel bridges still remaining from the original Alaska Highway project.
Interestingly it was built so paddle wheelers could slip beneath her…
