Happy International Museum Day! 📖

Museums are catalysts for connection. At the Whale Interpretive Centre, we work to connect people to the marine environment. Through engaging interpretation and skeletons and specimens, WIC guests gain a deeper understanding about marine mammals and the actions we can take to conserve their populations.

While the Whale Interpretive Centre is under construction following the 2024 fire, we hope to welcome guests back very soon and we look forward to bringing you closer to the marine mammals of Johnstone Strait through the WIC's displays and interactive discussions!

When traveling to northern Vancouver Island this summer, be sure to enrich your experience with a visit to the many museums and cultural centres around. Check out Vancouver Island North's website for more details about the centres in the area.

Memories from Jan Chapman's visit in 2024!

One of the many rewarding components of the WIC's work is seeing guests return year after year to learn more about the incredible marine animals that call Johnstone Strait home. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the WIC's new facility soon 🐋

Thank you to Dr. Sandra Scott from the University of British Columbia’s Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy for supporting the rebuild of the Whale Interpretive Centre’s collection!

Sandra generously gifted the WIC a pilot whale skull, cougar skull, humpback whale barnacle, and several other amazing specimens that WIC guests will get to enjoy this summer. These specimens are excellent teaching tools and will provide hands-on opportunities for a more impactful learning experience.

Thank you so much, Sandra!

As a registered charitable society, volunteers have contributed to all aspects of our operations. Thank you to everyone who has ever dedicated their time to help with interpretation, exhibit set up, necropsies, bone cleaning, administrative tasks, and more! Your support is invaluable and we are truly grateful for all you’ve done for the WIC. 💙

📸 Volunteers Jim, Doug, and Roy hang Stubby, a 3.5-m killer whale skeleton in the WIC (2016). This young whale was found near Namu in 1989, making this skeleton one of the oldest in the WIC’s previous collection.
