We had the privilege of visiting Dr. Jing Xia in her studio space as part of our Arts for Equity project—an opportunity to listen, learn, and experience the depth of her artistic journey. ✨

An award-winning guzheng artist, composer, producer, and ethnomusicologist based in Newfoundland, Dr. Xia brings a powerful and innovative voice to Canada’s contemporary music scene. Born and raised in Hunan, China, she began studying the guzheng at the age of six and has since cultivated a remarkable practice shaped by global perspectives and deep cultural roots.

Her work bridges musical traditions across cultures and genres, creating space for dialogue, connection, and new forms of expression. Through her practice, Jing Xia reminds us of the transformative power of music to transcend boundaries and bring communities closer together.

Eastern Edge Artist-Run Centre is is hosting it's second Open Studios, and we’re so excited to open our doors and create space for artists, creatives, and community members to come together, make, and connect. You will also get a chance to meet our Artist in Residence Jem Woolidge and our summer staff ( to be announced).

Open Studio is for everyone. Bring the project you’re working on, invite your friends and family, or simply drop by to spend time in a creative, welcoming space. Whether you’re a painter, a weaver, trying something new, or just curious, there is a place for you here 🤍

Want to be part of one of the most exciting arts festivals on the coast this summer? Apply to volunteer for HOLD FAST Festival 2026!📸✨

HOLD FAST is a non-profit arts festival in St. John’s, NL / Ktaqmkuk, creating free and accessible opportunities to experience and engage with local art. Join us for our Garage Sale Fundraiser from June 25 to 27 and the festival from August 12 to 15.
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support both events. All experience levels are welcome.

📅 Deadlines:
Garage Sale: June 17
Festival: July 15

✨ Volunteers who complete 5+ hours are eligible for a FREE Eastern Edge membership.

We can't wait to unveil these shows to you. 🤍🖤 Join us this Friday, June 12 from 6-8pm for the opening reception for Jongwook Park's "One Breath, Many Echoes | 숨·결들" in the Main Gallery, and Kristen Piercey's "Unfed Hunger" in the rOGUE Gallery. 📣 Calling all Eastern Edge Members!!! 📣 It’s that exciting time of year again, our Members’ Exhibition call for submissions is now OPEN!! 🎉

This is your opportunity as a member of Eastern Edge to showcase your work alongside other members of our talented community. We want to see what you have been making! 🖼

We will once again be holding the Members’ Exhibition Silent Auction! The Silent Auction is a fundraiser which will run throughout the exhibition. Participating artists have the option to put their pieces up for auction, and will receive 50% of the sale price, while the remainder helps support Eastern Edge’s year-round programming.

We are pleased to present a new rOGUE Gallery exhibition: Unfed Hunger by Kristen Piercey! 🖤❤️ This exhibition will be on display from June 12 - July 25, and we will be celebrating with an opening reception on Friday June 12th from 6-8pm! There will be plenty of snacks and refreshments, we hope you’ll join us to celebrate Kristen’s work! 🎉

"Unfed Hunger is composed of two doilies laid on individual red tea plates that are coupled together by crochet that spills over each plate and pools to mimic blood. While doilies are traditionally associated with domesticity and care, these doilies are black, turning their inherent delicacy, somber. The plates beneath them consider themes around both communion and sacrifice, evoking the Catholic altar as much as the dinner table."

We’re so excited to announce our next Main Gallery exhibition: One Breath, Many Echoes | 숨·결들 by Jongwook Park! 🎉

We will be holding an opening reception next Friday, June 12th from 6-8pm, and the exhibition will remain up from June 12 - July 25. During the reception, Jongwook will give an artist talk starting at around 6:30pm, so we hope you’ll join us to learn more about his practice, and celebrate his incredible work! 🖤🤍

"This exhibition explores how adult language acquisition shapes identity, rooted in my move from Seoul to the bilingual environment of Montreal. At the core of the installation are hand drawings that integrate Minhwa (Korean folk art) and Hangul (Korean script). By removing vibrant colors and breaking characters into unreadable shapes, the work illustrates how one’s own culture shifts and transforms when trying to understand another. The monochromatic imagery becomes a migrant pattern that reflects different methods of communication. These patterns move across mediums—directly on paper, scaled up through digital prints, and becoming undulated imagery by carving into wet clay."

We recently said farewell to our April – May Artist in Residence, Rae Swan . 👋🏻💞 We had such an amazing time getting to know Rae and their practice, and it was bittersweet to see them go!

While they were here, Rae explored St. John’s, taking inspiration from the surrounding land and sea. 🌊 They also shared an artist talk and demo with us towards the end of their residency, which we were so grateful for!

“My time at Eastern Edge was incredibly inspiring and invigorating. I spent time in the studio space and lots of time outside, with the land, developing a project that explores our interaction to the land and how we familiarize ourselves with new places," Rae said. "I’ll miss basking in the mist of the teal blue ocean and the very lovely people."
