🐟 Woodcarving Workshop Interest Check! 🐟

The Winnipeg River Heritage Museum is seeking expressions of interest for a one-day woodcarving workshop with Jean Mousseau of the Prairie Canada Carvers Association.

For over a decade, Jean has mentored carvers of all skill levels in creating realistic fish carvings, with many students receiving top honours at carving competitions.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will carve and paint a realistic wooden fish while learning carving, texturing, detailing, and finishing techniques from an experienced instructor.

✅ All materials provided
✅ Suitable for beginners and experienced carvers
✅ Take home your completed wooden fish
💲 Cost: $75 per person

We're hoping to schedule this workshop for late June.

What an exciting weekend at the Prairie Canada 2026 Carving Show & Competition! 🌲🏆

A huge congratulations to local carver Nick Bonekamp, who brought home several ribbons for his incredible wood carvings. Nick may be new to the craft, but his talent is undeniable!

From chainsaws to hand tools, the creativity and artistic talent in our communities continues to amaze us. Way to go, Nick! 👏🪵

We’ve welcomed some beautiful new additions to our museum gift shop!

We’re excited to feature a collection of handcrafted birch bark containers, walking sticks, and smudging fans created by George Slater of Great Falls, Manitoba. A self-taught artist, George draws inspiration directly from the natural world around him—each piece reflects a deep connection to the land and traditional craftsmanship.

These one-of-a-kind items make meaningful gifts or special keepsakes, and we’re proud to support artists who bring such care and authenticity to their work.

We’re always looking to grow our gift shop with unique, locally made pieces. If you’re an artist or maker interested in showcasing your work, we’d love to hear from you!

In 2015, a group of women began tying red ribbons on a local bridge in The Pas to acknowledge the many missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. Althea Guiboche then led this movement in Winnipeg as a gentle reminder to keep the women and girls in one's heart, thoughts, and prayers. The MMIW movement has since expanded to include Indigenous girls and Two-spirit individuals who are missing or have been murdered.

These ribbons were given to the Museum after they were found on the ground having been removed from the Esplanade Riel railings by City of Winnipeg workers. MMIWG2S is acknowledged each year on May 5 and also known as Red Dress Day.

Spring is slowly coming to life along the river—but here at the museum, we’re already buzzing with summer energy!

We’re currently featuring a vibrant mixed media exhibition in partnership with Maison Des Artistes (Winnipeg), while also preparing a virtual WWI exhibit and putting the finishing touches on our community butterfly garden—opening early this summer.

We’re also excited to launch our community birdhouse building competition & exhibition! 🐦 Submissions are due May 29, 2026, with entries on display all summer long.

Behind the scenes, we’re gearing up to participate in a strategic planning session with Community Futures, welcoming two summer students, and preparing community programming—including our annual golf fundraiser.

We’ve received our very first submission for our “Place to Land” Birdhouse Building Competition & Group Exhibition 🐦

Beautifully constructed by Gary Buhay of Lac du Bonnet, this piece is whimsical, functional, and eco-friendly — a wonderful start to what we know will be an inspiring collection.
