Quilts for chemo

This past winter the Grenfell Handicraft Committee group has been busy making quilts for the chemo unit at the Charles Curtis Hospital. We're a group of approximately 25 women who meet each Monday night at the Grenfell Interpretation centre, quilting, sewing, crocheting, knitting, hooking or whatever other craft one wants to do. When one of our members was visiting the chemo unit with a family member, she learned that there were no quilts available for chemo patients. She brought this back to our group and it sparked from there. Members brought in fabric, backing and batting to donate to this project. Every Member helped in some way, those who didn't sew , crochet or knit donated money to purchase backing and a batting. Monday nights turned into a quilting night sewing lap sized quilt tops, with some taking fabric home to finish up the quilting. Another member who has a long arm machine kindly offered to do the quilting part on some of them, while others were totally completed at home. I don't think a runnig total of quilts was kept, but to date I'd estimated 20 or more has already been delivered, with others in various states of completion. Some patients have posted pictures on their personal page indicating how appreciative they were of the quilts. Inspired by the words of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, "The service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room on this earth" our members hope to continue making lap quilts to bring comfort and encouragement to chemotherapy patiends during some of their most difficult times.
