As a small museum, Strathma rarely makes use of “big data” AI. What we do use AI for is accessibility – specifically by using OCR (optical character recognition) tools to make handwritten documents more readable for both humans and screen-reading technology. OCR greatly increases the speed at which our archives team can make handwritten documents more accessible.

As you can see in our photo, however, most OCR tools aren’t perfect, and it’s up to humans to correct any mistakes the AI makes. AI processes, including AI-assisted OCR, still require a human touch!

Cree: The People’s Language is still on display at Strathma until August 31.

This travelling exhibit introduces visitors to Cree, one of the most widely spoken Indigenous languages in Canada. Through colourful panels, maps, photos, and information, the exhibit explores topics such as the syllabic writing system, word formation, animacy, and the future of Cree.

The exhibit is on loan from the Canadian Language Museum, and we’re grateful to have it here for the community to visit.

Stop by during museum hours if you haven’t had a chance to see it yet.
