Aka artist run centre

Aka artist run centre AKA is a centre for emergent practices for artists at any stage of their careers, providing support

AKA supports the creation and development of artist driven initiatives and emerging practices that speak to, reflect and encourage dialogue in our culturally diverse communities. This includes work in all media by local, national and international artists. Our venues consist of a street-level gallery, billboard and multi-use screening and performance event space; we also source off-site locations

for site-specific projects. We are committed to acting as a centre for risk-taking and artistic self-determination produced by a diversity of voices; engaging in critical discourse and intersections with related cultural practices.

Studio Apartment for Rent!

Welcome to the first phase of our arts focused residency and housing project in the heart of Caswell Hill. Together, Paved Arts and sīkwan are in the process of realizing the core values, neighbourhood and land-based responsibilities, and support systems to visiting and local artists in all disciplines in our residency house. The vision for the house will be co-authored with Elders and communities.

Starting July 1, 2026 the artist’s apartment is available for rent. The basement studio apartment is fully renovated, a 15-minute walk from downtown and Riversdale, includes utilities, and internet and comes with the option of a studio at sīkwan, together with a production membership with Paved Arts, and a membership with Makerspace.

This space is prioritized for artists and makers from all disciplines. Rent is 1219.10 monthly for a 12-month lease. Email [email protected] for an application.

Join us on Saturday May 30th at 1:30pm for conversations with the artists of nanâtohkokwâsowak | Bidakiigiwewog over tea and pastries. Crafting and making supplies will be provided, if you have a project you’re working on please feel free to bring it.

nanâtohkokwâsowak | Bidakiigiwewog brings together Anishinaabe, Cree, Métis, and Saulteux prairie artists using quilting as an exploration of relationship building, understanding familial relationships, building new friendships, and the impact of gifting.

Quilting is an action, one of bringing something together, each stitch holds more than the fabric it binds together.

In addition the AKA/PAVED Arts shared studios will be hosting Open Studios from 12pm to 1:30pm!

Quilts preserve our family stories, are physical representations of collaborative making, learned techniques, and tangible representations of the labour of ancestral hands. So often the common narrative centres quilting as a settler tradition, but we know that sewing patchwork blankets was transformed into its own practice by many Indigenous cultures.
