“The Salvage Fisherman’s Museum is pleased to announce that we will receive funding from the Young Canada Works - Heritage Organizations, to hire a General Manager for the period June 15 - to August 25, job poster as attached.”

Job Poster
General Manager - Salvage Fisherman’s Museum (SFM)
The Salvage Fisherman’s Museum, is located in a small 160-year-old fisherman’s house in the historic fishing village of Salvage, Bonavista Bay, NL, population 120. The collection focuses mainly on the life of pre confederation fishing families. The second oldest community run museum in NL, it was established in 1969, and for 40 years was run by a local family, the Hefferns. Presently, it is operated by a seven-person, volunteer committee. There are no permanent employes. The successful candidate for the summer position of General Manager will supervise two summer student employees.
Recent Accomplishments
The building was restored by heritage carpenters, under the direction of an archaeology graduate (MA), hired through (YCW-HO) in 2021. This led to the building receiving a Heritage Designation as the “Lane/Heffern House”. Cohesive, thematic exhibits and interpretive panels were subsequently developed and updated from 2022 to 2025 with employees, funded through the YCW and MUN co-op student programs. For the 2026 summer season, we will hire a General Manager, through YCW-HO, to continue the evolution and improvement of this small museum.
Duties
Under direction of the Museum Committee, the General Manager will:
- Supervise 2 summer students hired to deliver museum tours, provide tourist information and sell consignment goods.
- Assist the Exhibits Committee in the creating a new Fishing, Farming, Hunting, exhibit.
- Oversee and record daily revenues from sales and admissions.
- When needed at busy times, interact with the public, leading museum tours etc.
- Work to develop a media strategy and website.
- Update acquisition records and other forms related to Collections Management.
- Organize archives and office files.
- Help organize and manage two small museum events,
- Other related duties.
Benefits of this position
Because the SFM is a small museum, we are seeking a General Manager who will have responsibility for all aspects of summer operation. We are looking for a candidate who wants this breadth and depth of exposure that a position in a larger institution might not offer.
Salvage
Salvage is a working fishing community. As a tourist destination, it is recognised for its historic fishing stages and natural scenic beauty. Located on Route 310, it is 7 km from the sandy beaches of Eastport and 30 km from Terra Nova National Park. For those interested in hiking, Salvage is at the centre of the 30 plus km Damnable Trail network, one of these trails begins at the museum door. We anticipate an increase in visitors this summer due to the very recent opening of the nearby Salvage Longhouse, housing a coffee shop, restaurant, brewery and a hotel.
Qualifications
Excellent communication skills. A background or demonstrated interest in history, archeology or anthropology. Experience working in the heritage sector is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software.

Pop Up History 🛎️📚📜

Explore the charm of Salvage – the historic heart of the Eastport Peninsula. Once a main settlement and the pivot point of local communities, Salvage boasts a storied past. Back in its prime, before the 1950s, Salvage was not only the largest but also the most central settlement, intricately connected by sea routes. The Reverend Frederick J. J. Smith, a 19th-century missionary, once described Salvage in 1878 as the spider’s body of his mission's layout, with journeys to surrounding settlements akin to traversing spider legs. Over time, Salvage nurtured nearby communities like Eastport, Burnside, and St. Chad's, playing a pivotal role in the region's expansion including the development of Sandy Cove

Cameron Squire and Clay Lane are wrapping up their final week at the Salvage Fisherman's Museum here in picturesque Salvage Harbour. Don't miss your chance to join them for a tour before they depart! Working alongside the Collections Committee—Alan, Jeanette, and Jim—Cameron and Clay have dedicated themselves to updating exhibits and maintaining meticulous records. Beyond this, they've excelled in engaging with visitors, conducting tours, providing tourist information, and assisting Kerry recording and pricing items for sale at the Craft Shop.

The Museum Committee extends heartfelt thanks to Cameron and Clay for their immense contributions this summer. They have been instrumental in enhancing our signage, labeling, and record-keeping, as well as in organizing the upstairs displays. Their efforts in setting up the office, resource area, and art cart have greatly enriched the experience for our visitors, allowing them to enjoy a cup of tea and delve into crafts amidst the tranquility of our beloved museum.

SUNSET MITTENS

Inspired by Jeanette Lanning's breathtaking sunset photograph, Shirley Scott has expertly translated this vibrant photograph into a captivating colorway for her renowned "Salvage Sunset Mittens," featured in her knitting book, Saltwater Mittens.

Last year, Shirley generously donated several pairs of these uniquely crafted mittens to the Salvage Fisherman’s Museum, sparking a tradition of warmth that continues to thrive. This year, talented knitters Pauline Duke and Susan Pye have lovingly created additional pairs using Shirley's delightful colorway, each stitch capturing the essence of our cherished sunsets.

These special mittens are more than just a warm embrace for your hands; they are key to supporting our beloved Salvage Fisherman’s Museum. By acquiring these mittens, you're not only getting a piece of local craftsmanship but also contributing to the preservation of our beautiful museum.

We warmly invite you to visit the museum, where you can admire and acquire these beautiful mittens, and in doing so, support the ongoing efforts to keep our museum a beacon of history and culture.
