Another exciting week at the NBBHS Heritage Centre!

We had the pleasure of welcoming participants from Key Industries for a guided tour exploring the rich history and contributions of Black New Brunswickers.

We were also honored to host members of the newly elected Council of Southern Victoria & Carleton North, including NBBHS Acting President Joe Gee, for a guided tour of the Heritage Centre. Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the Underground Railroad and the annual Tomlinson Lake Hike to Freedom.

The hike, which has been held annually for over a decade, honors the courageous journey of Black freedom seekers through the Underground Railroad. This year's hike will take place on October 3rd.

Last week was a lively and impactful one for us at NBBHS!

We welcomed more than 100 students from Barnhill Memorial School to the Heritage Centre for guided tours. Student groups rotated through our exhibits, explored the stories of Black New Brunswickers, and engaged in meaningful discussions about Black history and its lasting impact on our province and country.

We were also pleased to visit Kings Landing Historical Settlement, where we delivered a presentation highlighting the history, experiences, and contributions of Black New Brunswickers.

To round out the week, we were honored to be part of the Just Like Family Home Care 2026 Expo. This community-focused event brought together seniors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community organizations to share resources, promote healthy aging, and support seniors in living safely, independently, and with dignity at home.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed us, learned with us, and continues to support the preservation, celebration, and sharing of Black history in New Brunswick 💚💙💜.

The Restorative Access to Justice Program invites you to participate in the Ubuntu Community Healing Circle: Restorative Narratives.

These culturally grounded, trauma-informed gatherings provide a safe and confidential space for Black community members to share experiences, access support, and engage in restorative healing conversations.

Last week was both exciting and meaningful at the New Brunswick Black History Society Heritage Centre.

We were delighted to participate in Beaconsfield Middle School's Cultural Night, celebrating the diversity, cultures, and stories that enrich our communities.

NBBHS was also honoured to host delegates of the Governor General's 2026 Canadian Leadership Conference during their visit to New Brunswick. Organized by the Provincial Council of People of African Descent in New Brunswick and hosted at the NBBHS Heritage Centre, the gathering provided an important opportunity for meaningful conversations around community development, inclusion, leadership, and the experiences of people of African descent in our province.

NBBHS was honoured to receive a certificate of recognition for hosting the event and contributing to the delegates' understanding of our communities and country.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to these valuable discussions. Together, we continue to build stronger communities, foster understanding, and preserve and share New Brunswick's Black history.

This week was filled with learning, community engagement, and meaningful interactions at NBBHS!

From engaging with Francophone members of Education and Early Childhood Development through a presentation and discussion, to welcoming students from Rothesay Netherwood School for guided bus tour to sites of Black historical significance and a tour of the Heritage Centre, NBBHS had the opportunity to connect with diverse groups through the sharing of Black history and heritage in New Brunswick.

We are always encouraged to see students, educators, and community members engaging with these important histories and ongoing conversations.

This week at NBBHS we were excited to take part in Forest Hills School’s Festival of Nations, Princess Elizabeth School's Multicultural Night, and Chris Saunders Elementary Multicultural Fair.

We also welcomed students from Fundy Middle and High School to the Heritage Centre for a guided tour.

In addition, we were honored to welcome New Brunswick’s Minister of Health, Hon. John Dornan, for meaningful discussions and exchanges at the Heritage Centre.

NBBHS is pleased to share an exciting employment opportunity

This week at NBBHS, we had the pleasure of participating in the ASD-S Heritage Fair, with a rich display of student project exhibitions, community exhibits, and an Awards Ceremony, including the presentation of the New Brunswick Black Heritage Award. Such impressive displays of history and ingenuity in storytelling by many young historians whose curiosity, research, and passion affirm that the future of learning and historical preservation is in good hands.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming YMCA newcomer clients, as well as a group visit from the Envision Saint John team, to the NBBHS Heritage Centre, where we shared stories of Black history in New Brunswick and explored the importance of heritage, community, and belonging.
