Our condolences to Jill, Robin, Cathy, and all of the friends and family of Don McDougall, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82. Don had decades of involvement with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Regina Rams that saw him inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of some of their championship teams. His impact in his community led to him being named the CTV Regina’s Citizen of the Year.

Don was a Roughriders director for 33 years and spent 29 years as the manager of the Riders’ game-day production team. He was also a director with the Regina Rams starting in 1973 and serving for more than five decades. He was the team’s president when they won national championships in 1980 and 1981. He was also the president of the Prairie Junior Football Conference for three years.

Don also had a long association with the Hall of Fame. He served as the producer of the annual Induction Dinner & Ceremony and spent six years on the board, including a term as the SSHF president.

Don was the president of Sask Sport for two years and a long-serving board member. He has also served as KidSport’s provincial chair for more than a decade. He spent 35 years as a teacher and principal in the Regina Public School system.

The Hall of Fame is debuting a new feature called Behind The Artifact! Wendel Clark joins SSHF curator Robyn Jensen for this episode of Behind the Artifact, where we discuss the history of artifacts donated to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. Clark was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019 after 15 seasons in the National Hockey League. Our condolences to the family and friends of Dale West, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 84 after a battle with cancer.

Dale was a member of the 1966 Saskatchewan Roughriders Grey Cup championship team and played seven seasons with the Riders. Born in Cabri, West graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon, where he set the provincial track record in the 100-yard sprint. He went on to play football and run track at the University of Arizona before attending the University of Saskatchewan. In his second season in the CFL, West intercepted 10 passes for 226 yards, which earned him the Western nomination for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian Award. Dale was also a three-time CFL West All-Star. While he was the Roughriders’ starting safety during his CFL career, he was also deployed as a receiver.

Beyond the gridiron, West was also an alternate on the 1960 Canadian Olympic speed skating team when he was still a teenager. Dale taught for 31 years and served three terms as a trustee with the Regina Public School Board. He was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and spent seven years working for the Hall as its program coordinator. He remained a dedicated volunteer and served on the Board of Directors.

Did you know that the Hall of Fame has an inducted team named after Queen Victoria?
The Regina Victorias won the Allan Cup in 1914 to claim the world amateur hockey championship. The Vics beat Grand-Mère, Québec in the final 4-1, having knocked off the defending champion Winnipeg Monarchs to reach the final.
Two members of the Vics have been inducted into the Hall of Fame as individuals. Richard “Hammy” Hammond qualified for the 1912 and 1920 Olympics in track and field, but was passed over both times by the Canadian Olympic Committee. Edward Lyman “Hick” Abbott was an incredible multi-sport star who died during the First World War.
Abbott wasn’t the only member of the Vics who enlisted, team captain Austin Creswell, goalie Fred McCulloch, defenceman Charlie Otton, and rover Freddy Wilson all served their country.
Fred Wilson and Al Urquhart also played football for the Regina Rugby Club, now known as the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Urquhart was the longest serving member of the original 1910 team. His uniform and story are currently on display at the Hall of Fame.
Happy Victoria Day everyone!
