A quick history of the Redwater Horton Steel Watersphere!
The construction of the Watersphere began in February 1956 and was to be erected on 1st Ave. north at 2nd St. east. The Watersphere cost $35,000, rose 95 feet, and was the first 50,000 gallon Watersphere installed in Western Canada.
By March of 1956, Horton Engineering finished the welding of the frame for the tower. In May 1956 the Watersphere received its final coat of aluminum paint and placed under operation, then on Labour day it was Christened following the painting of “Redwater” on the side of the tank.
The Watersphere received recognition in Canada’s leading Civic magazine which was distributed throughout Canada and the U.S.A. In July 2016 the Watersphere was dismantled, here we share some photos of that process.

Have you ever wondered how the Discovery Derrick became a monument in Redwater? Well, lets take a look!
The Discovery Derrick was constructed on July 2, 1948 on Hilton Cook’s farm which was located one mile east and ¾ miles north of Redwater. After the discovery role of the derrick was completed, it was determined that a derrick this large was no longer required for the shallow wells in Redwater. At the time new “jack knife” derricks were released, allowing for new derricks to be set up within hours instead of weeks like before. Since the Discovery Derrick was owned by Imperial Oil, it was stored in their drilling yard destined to become scrap iron.
In 1955 the Redwater Gas Plant decided to use the derrick to support their H2S flare stack. However, following a stack failure on January 2, 1989 the stack had to be removed, and once again the Discovery Derrick was set to be scraped. Then a “Save our Derrick” committee was created by concerned citizens to turn the derrick into a monument in Redwater!
As mentioned in The Roughneck newspaper clipping, the Discover Derrick became a permanent monument in Redwater due to the efforts of many people including, Larry Cherkerda, Don Hall, Boyd Heyland, Jack Johnson, John Lang, Bill Marchak, and Colleen Martin! Not to mentioned many other businesses in town as well as charitable donations from townspeople. Here we have included images of the relocation and reconstruction of the Discovery Derrick to Redwater, along with the sign that further explains the history of the Discovery Derrick!

Discovery Days is only 4 days away so lets start our count down by looking back at the 1968 Pool Parade Fundraiser!

If you remember from our earlier post on the Redwater Pool it first opened in 1968. This wouldn't have been possible without the individuals in these photos supporting and campaigning to raise funds for the pool! We are so lucky to still have the pool here today as a place to splash and cool down in the summer! Keep an eye out on the Town of Redwater page to see what the pool has planned for Discovery Days! Don't forget to stop into the Redwater and District Museum, we are open Monday to Saturday this week from 10-4!
