This is an in-person book launch on Friday, June 12, 2026, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, starting at 7:30 pm. At the Plast Domivka, 10148 – 79 Street, Edmonton.



The Ukrainian Pioneers Association of Alberta presents, “A Harvest of Sugar Beet Stories”.

The book is the family history of David Chernushenko, whose father immigrated to Canada as a seven year-old with his parents and younger sister in the wake of the Second World War, having been sponsored to work on a sugar beet farm outside of Lethbridge. He describes the process by which he researched his Ukrainian family story and the impact that it has had on his identity.

Twenty-three year old Allison Moore Libbey of Cookville, Alberta enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on January 5th, 1915.

He arrived in England on the morning of June 14th, 1915. He went to Shorncliffe the same afternoon and from there went to St. Martin’s Plains. Allison trained for 4 months and then went to France on October 9th, 1915.

He was killed in the Battle of Courcelette after being hit with an artillery shell on September 15th, 1916. He is memorialized at the Vimy Ridge Memorial in France.

Mr. and Mrs. Soucy operated this Bank of Commerce in Redwater, but it was closed in 1925 and was sold to Mr. Arley Hinkley for a farm residence. The photo was taken from the area of the current ATB looking south towards the grain elevators and rail line.
