Quesnel & District Museum and Archives Welcome to the official page of the Quesnel & District Museum and Archives! We are a seasonal Museum. From October to April we are open Saturdays 9 am - 4 pm.

We will use this page to post about special events, new products in the gift shop or to highlight items from the collection. We are open Tuesday - Saturday, 9:30 am - 5 pm in May and September and daily from the 24th of May weekend to Labour Day.

A Heartwarming Family Legacy

This generous donation comes from a gentleman named A. Blake Gordon. The photographer behind all these stunning images is Helen Jean Stokes, Blake's grandmother. The photos capture memories from a semi-annual family trip to the Bowron Lake Chain, from 1925 to 1931. His son, Ian Gordon, and Aunt Joyce Stokes, both talented artists, added some vibrant touches to several of the framed prints using watercolors.

Exciting Updates on Cherished Recipes

We have recently uncovered new information for this post, highlighting treasured recipes generously donated by the women of Quesnel and Cariboo. These recipes belonged to Emma Johnson (née Pinchbeck) and include:

A shortbread recipe from Mrs. J.A. Fraser
A delightful recipe from Mrs. D.L. Fraser
A banana and apple sauce cake recipe from Mrs. Walten
A date-nut cookies recipe from Ethel Johnson
A bread and butter pickle recipe from Mrs. Norman

A Glimpse into Cherished Recipes and Newspaper Clippings
This collection features a small selection of recipes and newspaper clippings from an unknown era when these little papers were valued, shared, and passed down through generations. Unfortunately, we possess limited information about them, and each handwritten recipe showcases a unique style of writing. This collection was generously donated by Anne Rowlandson.

2014.2.8812 - This photo was in the Observer in March of 1994. It is of Connie McConnell who had at the time been working with stained glass for around 13 years. She worked in Gina Original’s Hobbies and Crafts at Maple Park Mall.
2014.2.7466 - This photo is from December of 1991 of Merrilee Shpak showing her hand crafted wall paper fan at the Native Friendship Centre's craft fair.
2014.2.5550 - This photo is of Greg Sween and the Quesnel sign in July of 1990. The accompanying Observer caption reads “Greg Sween of Dovetail Logcraft built the city of Quesnel sign to start with, and he’s giving it a bit of a touchup.”

A photograph taken circa 1910 showcases Kathleen Johnston and Aveline Hill enjoying a ride in a horse-drawn buggy. They are seen passing by the Chuie Yen Baths, Bakery & Laundry; Restaurant, situated at the corner of Reid Street and Barlow Avenue. This property was purchased by C. D. Hoy in 1913.

Quesnel's Enduring Passion for Theatre and Cinema
Quesnel has long been a fan of both theatre and film, a sentiment that is clearly evident. In 1910, entertainment was offered at the Occidental Hotel Theatre Room. This was followed by the Empress Theatre, which operated from 1914 to 1916. The Rex Theatre served as a venue from 1914 until 1953, after which the Carib Theatre has continued to provide entertainment up to the present day. Additionally, the Casbar Drive-In Theatre opened in 1958 and ran until 1988. What was the first movie you watched at the Carib Theatre?
