It's the May Long Weekend and HMCS Ojibwa is open Friday, May 15th through Monday, May 18th. Come aboard and discover some submariner humor on the Officer of the Watch Panel in the Control Room. Chances are you may get to meet a submariner who served on Ojibwa or her sisters Okanagan and Onondaga. The weather is going to be great!

HMCS Ojibwa mourns the loss of one of her commanding officers, LCdr Ron Perks, who commanded Ojibwa from June 1st, 1972 to January 14th 1975. The Commander visited Ojibwa in her new home in Port Burwell, Ontario on many occasions beginning with the formal opening of HMCS Ojibwa as a museum in 2013. He was a son of Saskatchewan but drawn to the sea and retired to Pickering on the shore of Lake Ontario in eastern Ontario. He proudly brought members of his family from Saskatchewan and Victoria to tour his old 'home' in 2018 as well as large numbers of fellow members of the PROBUS Club of Pickering on several occasions. It is his personal sleeping bag from his submarine days that visitors see in the Captain’s Cabin when they tour Ojibwa. While we have only heard the early news of his passing and are not able to convey any details regarding the funeral, we have taken this opportunity to share his joy in his submarine career as seen in his visits to Port Burwell. To his family, colleagues and friends, we extend our sincere condolences.

HMCS Ojibwa is open this weekend. It may be a bit chilly but not as cold as that faced by those served in the longest battle of WW II - the Battle of the Atlantic. It is an opportunity to honor their service and reflect on those who chose to follow in their footsteps. Every year, on the Sunday closest to May 5th, there are memorial services across Canada honoring those who served in those cold and treacherous waters in a battle that lasted not days, or months but years. HMCS Ojibwa was commissioned 20 years after the war ended in response to a new "Cold War": the sea was still cold and unforgiving and her crew still dedicated to their mission.

Typical spring day at Ojibwa yesterday (April 22nd) - Doug cutting the grass and Ian working on the seacans. The temperature was 22 Celsius and the sun. The birds were singing up a storm and the frogs were adding the background sound. Catherine worked in the garden clearing up some of the signs of a long winter. Ian is back at the 'boat' today. Ojibwa is open next on the weekend. Make certain you get the time you want by pre-booking at https://ojtickets.yapsody.com/ Remember you don't pay till you arrive.

Great time Tuesday - April 21st when we had 18 students and two adults from Essex District High School. The journey is about 200 kilometers or approximately 125 miles. Wisely, they decided not to to walk - Google Maps shows that it would take about 44 hours - one way!
