Early 2000s, another superbe rainy day at Henry’s carving shed on Chestermans beach. It’s cold, it’s wet, it’s getting dark, but we were good friends and had fun. Plus having Henry has a teacher meant the best of the west tools.
This photo was myself working on one of Henry’s 8 footers (2 crests)

A bit about me!
My name is Lyne Cootes maiden name Des Rosiers, I was born in Montreal in 1976. I have completed a degree in fine arts at the Cegep Joliette de Lanaudière in 1997 in Joliette Quebec.
In 2000 I met my carving Teacher Late Henry Nolla, who had learned and worked closely with Roy Vickers as well as Art Vickers. I apprenticed with Henry on Totem poles, later on large bowls, and spoons. After Meeting Tla o qui aht carvers Joe Martin and his family we carved many pieces that were shipped around the world like bentwood boxes, large bowls, and later I self taught making masks, talking sticks and other regalia for Potlatches including paddles.
Understanding the importance and respect owed to my indigenous family has become a priority over the past 26 years. The meaning of ishuk ma tsawalk and hiisaak and the teachings behind all the crests are the things my husband Trevor Cootes, his mom Patricia Rytter and I want to pass down to our children.
Thank you for your support!

Hey guys thank you for the love.
My small paddles are about 5-6 inches long. They are small but not mini.
The wood is not easy to track down and getting it cut to the right thickness is pricy.
Each paddle is made one by one. My beautiful daughter Samantha traces them all and I cut, carve, sand them down by hand. Thank you for respecting my work and dedication. I used to carve large totem poles with my Tla o qui ath family and now married into Huuayaht and relocated in PA, I am carving smaller items to get by.

Today I am working on an order from one of my number one customers in Port. She gets kids to put stamps on their mini paddles to take home. ☀️🙏🏼❤️
