Over July and August, adventurers stamped their way through the Plamondon Museum, Lac La Biche Museum, and Lac La Biche Mission, exploring local history one passport page at a time. This was my first summer with the Plamondon Museum, and getting to be part of the Passport Contest made it an unforgettable one. Watching families, history buffs, and curious first-time visitors move between all three sites โ€” passports in hand, always excited to talk about what they'd found โ€” was such a joy to be part of.

๐ŸŒพ ARTIFACT OF THE WEEK: The Wood Flail
Plamondon Museum Collection | Est. 1800s

What is it?
A two-piece wooden threshing tool used to separate grain from stalk โ€” the low-tech, high-effort ancestor of the combine harvester.

How It Worked:
A long staff (handle) connects to a shorter swipple (striking piece) via a leather thong, letting the swipple swing freely and build momentum. Farmers laid sheaves across a threshing floor and swung โ€” thwack, thwack, thwack โ€” knocking grain loose, then winnowed it in the wind to separate grain from chaff.

Why It Matters:
Before steam- and horse-powered threshers arrived in the mid-to-late 1800s, this was how grain got processed on family farms โ€” usually in the barn through the winter months. Every loaf of bread started here. ๐Ÿ™Œ To the pioneer farmers who spent cold winters flailing by hand, and to the modern-day farmers still working these fields today โ€” our community runs on your hard work, then and now. Handle? Yes. Two tidy rows of holes? Also yes. Scorched like it's seen some heat? Big yes. Nobody on staff agrees on what it does.
