🌾 ARTIFACT OF THE WEEK: The Wood Flail
Plamondon Museum Collection | Est. 1800s

What is it?
A two-piece wooden threshing tool used to separate grain from stalk β€” the low-tech, high-effort ancestor of the combine harvester.

How It Worked:
A long staff (handle) connects to a shorter swipple (striking piece) via a leather thong, letting the swipple swing freely and build momentum. Farmers laid sheaves across a threshing floor and swung β€” thwack, thwack, thwack β€” knocking grain loose, then winnowed it in the wind to separate grain from chaff.

Why It Matters:
Before steam- and horse-powered threshers arrived in the mid-to-late 1800s, this was how grain got processed on family farms β€” usually in the barn through the winter months. Every loaf of bread started here. πŸ™Œ To the pioneer farmers who spent cold winters flailing by hand, and to the modern-day farmers still working these fields today β€” our community runs on your hard work, then and now. Title: Yes Father: Pioneer Nursing in Alberta Author: Alvine Cyr Gahagan, R.N. Published: 1979

πŸ“… Yes Father will be on display at the Plamondon Museum throughout the month of July β€” we invite you to stop by and see this special piece of local history for yourself.

This heartfelt message comes to us from Linda Casorio of Decatur, Georgia, USA, great-granddaughter of Alvine Cyr Gahagan, who generously donated this book to our museum:

"To the town of Plamondon, a special piece of nursing history has found its way back to you!
Recently, I donated a copy of Yes Father, the memoir of my great-grandmother, Alvine Cyr Gahagan, to the Plamondon Museum. The book recounts her life experiences as a pioneer nurse in Alberta, including her time serving the community of Plamondon during its early years, as well as her youth and later years in the United States. As a longtime EMT and new nurse myself, preserving her story feels especially meaningful. Her dedication to caring for others helped shape not only the communities she served, but also the generations that followed, including myself. The best parts of who I am as an individual today came from my Grand Memere and it is an honor to be able to share her story of courage and faith in the goodness of humanity. I'm grateful to the museum for helping ensure that her experiences, and an important chapter of local history, will be available for future generations to discover.
Thank you, Plamondon, for helping keep Nurse Cyr's legacy alive.
