Did you know that some of the world's earliest battlefield photographs were taken right here in Saskatchewan?
On April 24, 1885, Captain James Peters captured photographs during the Battle of Fish Creek while under fire. He would go on to create more than 70 photographs documenting the battles of Duck Lake, Fish Creek and Batoche—sometimes photographing from horseback and in the middle of combat.
At the same time, Peters was also reporting on the conflict as a war correspondent, making his photographs and written accounts among the earliest examples of frontline war reporting.
This week, we're taking a closer look at these remarkable photographs—and the stories they reveal.

Today is International Day of World Indigenous Peoples and this year the theme is to honour Indigenous midwives.

In historic Batoche, many Metis women were midwives and healers. It was these women who took great care of pregnant women, monitored their health, knew what to do in times of distress, and safely delivered babies. Their extensive knowledge was passed down to their daughters, nieces, and so on.

The work of these midwives ensured that future generations could thrive.
