THE REVEAL!đź‘€

Yesterday's mystery artefact was a theodolite!

A theodolite is a precision instrument having a telescopic sight for establishing horizontal and sometimes vertical angles. It is an instrument used for surveying. This theodolite was used for surveying in the Avro project!

Snake season is in full swing here in the West Parry Sound District!

The brave stars of these are Sandy Barron, John Barron, and Joseph Barron--a keeper of the Gereaux Island Lighthouse in Britt.

Though it can be exciting to see snakes, they're best left to tend to their own matters. Give these slithery friends lots of space as you admire them from afar. And remember: brake for snakes!

Happy International Museum Day, everyone! Today brings us the final reason of our 18 Reasons to Support the Museum, but our fundraising campaign will be continuing for the rest of the month of May! If you haven’t done so already, we kindly ask you to donate a minimum of 25 dollars to help support our operations. If you need a reason why, well… we have eighteen pretty good ones right here on our page ;)

As you probably already know, museums host exhibits. Usually, these exhibits are designed in house for a specific room by a team of curators and other museum personnel or by an external party such as an artist or group of artists. Sometimes, however, exhibitions can come from other sources.

Once in a while, we receive exhibit loans. It's our way of bringing the broader world to you! We have hosted a number of loaned exhibitions in the past, such as From Vimy to Juno by the Juno Beach Center, Indigenous Ingenuity by Science North, The Bats by the ROM, and several by the Archives of Ontario including Farm Fresh. In addition to receiving loans, we have also created loaned exhibits of our own, including a traveling exhibit on the Avro Arrow.

Museums are places of cultural exchange. Intermuseum loans such as these help widen our scope of educational influence within and outside of the community!

In addition to artefacts and archives, we also hold thousands of heritage photos in public trust. Historical photos enable us to see the past through a visual lens, allowing both major events and everyday life to be understood in a more accurate manner than would be when left up to memory or imagination. Much like oral histories, photographs humanize the past; solidify it as real—especifally for those who have not lived through it.

Our collection is constantly growing, which means that the storage, preservation, and digitization of these images held in public trust sit high among our list of priorities.

In 2018, we began working with Dr. Sali Tagliamonte, a linguistics professor with the University of Toronto to have John Macfie’s oral histories with local residents transcribed. Thereafter, Dr. Tagliamonte went on to perform her own interviews with senior residents of the West Parry Sound area to collect new oral histories. In total, we received 56 transcriptions from John Macfie interviews and ~40 of Dr. Tagliamonte’s own interviews.

This work went on to inspire the museum to conduct and collect our own oral history initiative. Now it is our standard practise to conduct our own interviews upon accepting new artefacts or archives into our collection!

Oral histories let individuals tell their version of the past in their own words. It also fosters a more subjective retelling of events, allowing an individual to tell a story from their perspective with their intentions and beliefs. It gives a human element to historical records and statistics that can be missing in more traditional forms of primary sources. Within the past 50 years, oral history collection has become a standard practise within many museums and academic institutions, and here at the Museum on Tower hill, we are proud to take part in this endeavour.

Every month, we try to put out a video on our YouTube channel. Our videos focus on museum operations and archives, touching on topics including: artefact and archival highlights, behind the scenes, and interviews with locals, volunteers, and staff. Here, you can find insight into local heritage and museum work that otherwise may not be accessible or available to patrons in the physical museum space. A little bit of bonus material, if you will.

April’s video was another installment of our “Artefacts with Ellen” series, where our volunteer, Ellen Bradey, sits down for a conversation on one of her childhood dolls currently housed in the museum collections. Be sure to check it out at https://youtu.be/5s96utPaXoU?si=NdM4uqVVNRixJza_

If you haven’t already subscribed to our channel, be sure to do so ;)

Because museums hold THOUSANDS TO MILLIONS of cultural artefacts in public trust, it is imperative that an institution has a navigable storage system. With such a large quantity of items, however, it is easy for a museum’s storage system and staff to become overwhelmed. There are a multitude of reasons that this may happen, and often these overlap. The switching of hands, improper or loss of documentation, technological failures or mishaps, lack of physical storage space, disjointed or confusing organization, and so on.

In 2015, the Museum on Tower Hill worked with ICCROM-UNESCO’s international RE-ORG project in a massive undertaking to reorganise our collections room. Before this, the museum underwent a change in ownership, leaving staff with little-to-know idea where anything was. For reference, one of the measurements ICCROM-UNESCO was concerned with was how long it took an institution to find 3 specific artefacts. Prior to the reorganization, it took 3 months to find these three items. Now it takes us around three minutes.

To do this, staff had to empty the entire collections room of over 20,000 objects/archives, label, organise, and put them all back in a cohesive manner. With artefacts and archives coming in and out near constantly, organisation and reorganisation remains an ongoing project, even over a decade later.
