There is just something magical about sgrafitto pottery pieces. As the potter methodically carves away clay…a pattern that they have pictured in their mind starts to appear. Each line is a reflection of their hand directing their tool - angle, pressure, and the specific tool they use all have an impact on the design that is formed.
Whether they maintain a design that’s set out in their mind, or follow inspiration to take it in another direction…. really depends on the potter.
This beautiful piece is created by local potter, Marion Lord.

One of the exciting things about having so many potters creations in the Train Station Pottery Shop is that when you step into the shop you are surrounded by a wide variety of pottery that is uniquely inspired by the point of view of each potter. From glaze colours to shape and texture - there is so much to explore throughout the walls and shelves of the shop.

We also have some potters that have access to other methods of firing their work such as raku, wood firing, and salt firing.
Recently Loose Peacock Pottery brought some obvara pieces into the shop…for people who aren’t familiar with the process an excerpt with a short explanation on obvara firing from Ceramic Arts Daily Article by Marcia Selsor is below:

“The obvara firing process, which originated in Eastern Europe around the 12th Century, involves scalding the finish on the pottery to seal the porous surface. Similar to the raku process a bisqued pot is heated…and removed from the heat. The difference is that the pot is then dipped into a specific obvara yeast mixture [mixture of flour, yeast and water]before being dunked in water to rapidly cool the piece.
