Museum Musings: Early television transformed life in rural Canada

Although today we are awash with cautionary tales about technology, the leaps and bounds of advancement we have witnessed in our lifetimes are astonishing.
In 1950, however, there was very little to watch. It wasn't until 1952 that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) launched its first television stations.

As television grew in popularity and broadcasting regulations evolved, more companies and networks entered the industry during the late 1950s, paving the way for the wide variety of programming that defined the 1960s.

The post-Second World War era marked a turning point in economic prosperity and ushered in significant social and cultural change. Leisure shifted into the home, and entertainment became more accessible than ever before. Shows such as I Love Lucy and Gunsmoke were watched by millions. News and journalism also changed dramatically, bringing major events directly into people's living rooms.

The Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, led by figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., appeared on television screens in ways that previous wars and social movements never had. Television became the narrator of everyday life, presenting an idealized vision of the nuclear family while helping to shape a shared national consciousness that had not previously existed. While television has had its share of drawbacks, its influence on society and culture is impossible to deny.
