Qillaniq is an Inuktitut word that describes how light from the sun or the moon shimmers brightly when reflecting on water.

Co-curated by an all-Indigenous team, the special exhibition includes more than 80 works of art by over 70 contemporary artists from across the circumpolar regions.

Come be inspired by fearless Indigenous artists.

A tranquil blue-green landscape by Japanese Canadian artist Kazuo Nakamura, a founding member of the Toronto-based Canadian abstract group Painters Eleven.

From his early stylized landscape paintings, he moved to more abstract compositions, which represented his interpretations of the “universal patterns” found in nature as predicated by science.

🪷 In collaboration with the Kew Gardens (UK), seeds of the giant water lilies of the genus Victoria were first transplanted to the Orto botanico di Padova (IT) for germination. From there, they were transported to the Canada Pavilion to reach maturity by the opening of 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. 💼

👑 Named in homage to Queen Victoria, born on this day in 1819, they are considered her emblem. By re-presenting these plants and cultural emblems within the pavilion of a Commonwealth country established under the reign of their namesake, Abbas Akhavan offers a meditative space in which to revisit a pivotal moment in world history and to consider how we position ourselves today in relation to our natural and built environments. 🌍
