In 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘮𝘢𝘯, the viewers follows a soldier stationed in a watchtower along the divided territory of Cyprus. During his solitary watch, a robin repeatedly strikes the tower’s window, drawn toward a world separated from it by an invisible barrier. Its eventual death evokes, allegorically, a body falling in war, an image Cherri carries beyond the film into a watercolour painting. Through this quiet encounter, Cherri reflects on borders, surveillance, and the violence embedded within landscapes of conflict.

A key binding element in this exhibition is mud, the primeval matter of our creation stories, both resilient and fragile, the gritty matter of dreams. In 2019, with Lina Mounzer, Ali Cherri wrote and published 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘶𝘥 (Dongola Limited Editions). This book is in part manifesto, in part reverie; a story of earth and water, which one can see strains of throughout this exhibition. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘶𝘥 is an exploration of the past and the ways in which it inscribes itself physically: eroding, shaping, reforming, becoming itself through upheaval and destruction. Cherri is a storyteller in conversation with writers in both English and Arabic, unveiling “a story of perpetually shifting geographies, of elemental forces and terrain that cracks and rumbles and breaks over eons into new topographical formations.”They ask, “if mud had its own memory, what might it deem worth remembering?”—Séamus Kealy, Curator⁠

Ali Cherri’s Grafting series brings fragments of archaeological and natural histories into unexpected formations, drawing attention to the ways objects are collected, classified, and given meaning within museums. By assembling disparate materials, Cherri unsettles the categories and narratives through which histories are preserved and presented, asking us to consider what is revealed, altered, or left out when an object enters a museum collection.

On view at Gairloch Gardens, the series reflects Cherri’s ongoing interest in the museum as a site where histories are not simply preserved, but actively constructed. The works invite us to look beyond the objects themselves and consider the systems of collecting, display, and interpretation that shape how we understand the past.

"Installed in the porch facing the gardens, the neon sculpture 𝘓𝘦𝘴 (𝘚𝘶𝘳)𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 poetically references the perils of surviving catastrophe. Ali Cherri knows this sentiment personally, and speaks to the complex nature of surviving while others have perished in tragic or unjust circumstances, most notably in the war-torn region he and his family were raised in. ‘We all come with our baggage, we meet the other who has lived through the same experiences, and then we create a community of survivors,’ says Cherri." —Séamus Kealy, Curator⁠

In 𝘖𝘧 𝘔𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘶𝘥, Ali Cherri traces the history of the Merowe Dam, one of Africa’s largest hydroelectric dams on the Nile River in Northern Sudan. The work premiered at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, where it was awarded the Silver Lion.

Following a seasonal brickmaker who shapes mud into bricks by day and secretly constructs a mysterious creature by night, Cherri explores displacement, labour, and the human and environmental consequences of the dam’s construction, which forcibly displaced more than 50,000 people.

Drawing on ancient myths of the flooding Nile, the golem, and Noah’s Ark, this work considers mud and water as forces of creation and destruction, and reflects on how histories and myths shape ideas of the “Other.”

Ali Cherri turned to watercolour during the COVID-19 lockdowns, responding to confinement and the experience of working from a desk. The intimate paintings of 𝘞𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘮 in Gairloch Gardens are closely connected to 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘮𝘢𝘯, exhibited at Centennial Square, and draw from the geographical landscape of Cyprus.

Among the works are prickly-pear cacti, commonly used throughout the Mediterranean as natural fencing. Their thorns and protective structures evoke borders and defence, while also reflecting Cherri’s exploration of the politics of borders and the fragility of power.

"At the Centennial Gallery, you find the hypnotic film 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘮𝘢𝘯, featuring a soldier on watch between the Greek Cypriot South and the Turkish Cypriot North. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘮𝘢𝘯 is akin to a dream. The soldier’s duties transform into reveries provoked by histories and possibilities of violence. The film sets out from the political history of this troubled territory and invokes personal stories of its inhabitants. The work proposes a wide reflection on borders and their consequences regarding notions of sovereignty, identity and, ultimately, war, genocide and war crimes. As Ali Cherri described in an interview with Melhem Chamieh for 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳, “Making art is ultimately a gesture towards others—a way of reaching out to other sensitivities and other receptivities.” The sculptures in the 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 series, displayed in our Gairloch Gardens gallery, carry this sense of address, opening a space for us to reflect on and grapple with our own histories, traumas, and experiences, while also fostering a quieter sense of connection and care.
