๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Happy Father's Day!

These cherished photographs from our archives remind us that fatherhood โ€” and the love behind it โ€” has always looked a little different, but always felt the same. ๐Ÿ’™

To all the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures in our community: thank you for the memories, the lessons, and the love. ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿงก๐ŸŽ‰ June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day!

Today we celebrate the ongoing and valuable presence of Indigenous peoples in our Niagara communities.

Konwatsi'tsiaiรฉnni (Molly Brant) was a highly important Indigenous woman, born in 1736. The older sister of Thayendanegea (Joseph Brant), she was born into a family that was highly distinguished among the Mohawks. Her intelligence and leadership skills were undeniable and by her late teens she had gained the respect of Mohawk elders.

Konwatsi'tsiaiรฉnni was deeply connected to her culture and her community. She dressed in traditional Haudenosaunee clothing and led a society of Six Nations (Haudenosaunee Confederacy) matrons. She was a firm United Empire Loyalist as well as wielding economic power and deep influence over the Iroquois warriors. At 19 she fell in love with and married Sir William Johnson, the first superintendent of the Indigenous peoples in British North America.

It is for all these reasons that, during the American Revolutionary war, negotiations and allyships were facilitated by Konwatsi'tsiaiรฉnni between the British and the Haudenosaunee confederacy.

Her leadership and steadfastness throughout her life are why her legacy and story live on today, becoming an instrumental building block in the history of Niagara.

Not as well known as Yoga, Essentrics is a unique form of exercise that blends the flowing movements of Tai Chi with the balancing and strengthening properties of ballet. Set to music to encourage rhythm and flow, this low-impact practice focuses on promoting graceful aging, reducing pain and injury, and improving range of motion.

๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ญ: A welcoming, all-levels class done entirely standing, with a chair nearby for balance and support. No floor work, no mat needed โ€” just movement, music, and a focus on feeling better in your body.

๐Ÿ Did your ancestors help shape Niagara?

In commemoration of United Empire Loyalist Week, historian and proud United Empire Loyalist descendant Janet Hodgkins, UE brings to life the stories of Loyalists who fled persecution, crossed borders, and built new lives here in Niagara in the wake of the American Revolution.

"This is an invitation to explore your own roots โ€” who knows? You may have a Loyalist in your family!"

Canoes like this one were important not only for fishing and transport but also for diplomatic missions, warfare, hunting, and trade. Additionally, they are tied into Anishinaabe spiritual practices. Before the process began, Anishinaabe builders would partake in a ceremony that contemplated Ginawaydaganac, a law that emphasizes the interconnectedness of life including humans, animals, and the earth. As canoe building required them to take resources from the land, they would lay down offerings like to***co to honour reciprocity and gratitude.

Come and see a similar canoe to this one on our second floor at the NOTL Museum!
