This September 11, the gardens of the McArthur Estate will come alive for an afternoon among friends with wines from Konzelmann Estate Winery, signature cocktails from Niagara College Distillery, and fine food from Niagara's Finest Hotels. Guests will also have the pleasure of meeting historical characters brought to life, and bidding on truly special experiences and items in our silent and live auctions.

In 1911, the local Fire Department moved their fire hall from the Market Room in the courthouse on Queen Street to the building located at 10 Queen Street. Then in 1964, the fire hall moved up the street to 233 King Street (today the location of Aura-on-the-Lake). After that, several businesses moved into the building including Ye Old Fire Hall Gallery Antiques, run by Esme Allen, and the Canadian Mime Theatre. In 2009, this building was destroyed by fire, and it was rebuilt as a replica to help maintain the unique character of the heritage districtโ€™s main street.

Today 10 Queen Street is home to Sombra Mexican restaurant.

We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes, is a powerful documentary that brings to light the remarkable story of 40,000 teenage girls who stepped up during the Second World War to work on Canadian farms. Through perseverance, resilience, and determination, these young women played a vital role in sustaining food production during one of the most critical periods in modern historyโ€”helping to feed soldiers overseas and civilians facing severe shortages.

Told through the lens of historian and author Bonnie Sitter, and enriched with archival images and reenactments, the film captures both the hardships and the lasting bonds formed by the Farmerettes.

The film itself began with a chance meeting between director Colin Field and Bonnie Sitter, whose passion for preserving this forgotten history sparked the vision for the documentary. After interviewing 20 former Farmerettes and dedicating two years to the project, the film stands as a powerful tribute to their legacy. Bonnieโ€™s journey began years earlier with a single photograph labeled โ€œFarmerettes 1946,โ€ leading to the co-creation of the book Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: Memories of Ontario Farmerettes alongside former Farmerette and journalist Shirleyan English.
