What a fantastic night exploring Newmarket’s history! 📜✨

Our members had a wonderful time visiting the newly renovated Elman W. Campbell Museum. We loved seeing the recent upgrades and getting a peek into the Archives! A huge thank you to Nadine and the volunteers for guiding us through the beautiful exhibits and answering all our questions.

Afterward, we headed across the street where Wes Playter took us on a fascinating walk through the history of Roadhouse & Rose—Newmarket's oldest business and Ontario's third-oldest funeral home! 🏛️

Thank you to everyone who joined us for such a lovely, insightful evening! Thanks to our hosts as well for the warm welcome!

Although Mother's Day has been celebrated for centuries with festivals honoring mother goddesses such as Rhea in Greece and Cybele in Rome, the modern-day "Mother's Day" became official in the early 20th century through the efforts of Anna Jarvis. In 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and Canada soon adopted the same tradition in 1915.

So whether you are a mother to children, pets or plants, we hope you enjoy this special day dedicated to the sacrifices, hard work, love and care that mothers and caregivers have given throughout generations. Happy Mother's Day from all of us at the Newmarket Historical Society.

50 Years of St. Paul CES: A Landmark in Our Community’s History 🏫📜

As we look back at the development of our Town, our local schools have been integral to the lives of our families. St. Paul CES is no exception. 2025 marked the 50th anniversary of this staple in our community and they are celebrating this milestone on Monday May 4. Past staff will be celebrating from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM and there will be an open house from 6:30PM to 8:30 PM. More details on the school's website: https://spl.ycdsb.ca

The story of St. Paul is a perfect example of our community's rapid growth during the 1970s:

The Humble Beginnings (1975): Long before the current facility existed, the school began its life in a portapack.

A New Era (1978): By September 1978, the permanent building opened its doors—a reflection of the bustling development our Town was experiencing at the time.

The Blessing (1979): On April 22, 1979, the facility received its official blessing, cementing its place in our town’s social and spiritual landscape.

Frank Seeley served as the school’s first Principal from 1975 to 1981. Mr. Seeley’s leadership provided the bedrock for the school culture that continues to thrive today.
The Newmarket Historical Society extends our warmest congratulations to St. Paul’s CES on their 50th Anniversary. Half a century is a significant milestone in our town’s story. Thank you for your decades of dedication to education and for serving as a cornerstone of our community since 1975. Here’s to many more years of shaping the future of Newmarket!

Some of you may remember last September's presentation by Dan Zaroski and his amazing "coopering" (barrel making) skills and stories. Well if you want more, check out Dan's workshop on May 2 at 1pm at the Whitchurch Stouffville Museum. Cost is $45 and participants will make "barrel stave candle holders".

Last Thursday, our very own Chris Morris and Judy Perry treated residents at AMICA Newmarket to a fascinating journey through local history! ✈️📸

They took the audience on an aerial tour of our town—tracing its transformation from the very first hilltop photos to vintage plane captures, and finally to the drone photography of today. It was incredible to see the growth and development of Newmarket over the decades through such a unique lens.

A huge thank you to for hosting us once again! We look forward to seeing you all again soon.
