The Amelia Douglas Gallery is proud to present:

Echoes in Open Color
By Xixi Yang
📆: May 12-July 6, 2026
📍: Fourth Floor North, Douglas College New Westminster Campus

Join us for the opening reception on May 12 from 4:30 to 6pm.✨

About the exhibition:
This body of work explores a quiet balance between control and release. Through layered gestures, diffused edges, and fluid movement, each painting evolves as a space where intention meets spontaneity.

Natural hues—blues, greens, earth tones—are pushed into unfamiliar relationships, often interrupted by unexpected bursts of color. These combinations are not meant to resolve, but to remain open, inviting curiosity rather than conclusion. The surfaces shift between density and lightness, suggesting moments that feel both grounded and transient.

Across the works, there is no fixed narrative. Instead, they offer an atmosphere—something closer to a feeling than a statement. Drips, washes, and accumulations echo organic processes: growth, erosion, weather, and time. What emerges is a sense of quiet movement, as if each piece is still unfolding.

At its core, the exhibition is about freedom—freedom in mark-making, in color, and in interpretation. Viewers are invited to move through the work without expectation, to pause, to wander, and to find their own connections within these shifting fields.

Calling all Indigenous artists and makers! Submissions are now open for the annual group exhibit, kʷәcstәxʷ planned for September 18 –December 15, 2025.

All artistic media are welcome! Paintings, carvings, beadwork, photography, mixed media, textiles, print, sculpture (no video installations, sorry!)

To be considered for the show, please submit photos of up to three works for consideration (including name, artistic mediums/materials, and dimensions for each piece). Tell us a little about yourself, your nation, and your work. Just a few sentences will do.

Please send your submissions directly by email to [email protected] no later than July 11, 2025. Decisions will be made by mid-August. While we appreciate all submissions, only successful candidates will be contacted.

If you have any questions about the submission process, or would like more information, please reach out to Kennedy Rud, [email protected].

By embracing the essence of kʷәcstәxʷ (cause them to see; “show”), we see and support the diverse expressions of Indigenous artistry. This celebration is not merely an exhibition but an opportunity for our College and wider community to bear witness to the vibrant contributions of Indigenous artists in the community.

The Amelia Douglas Gallery is pleased to present: Botanically Inspired. May 8-July 4, 2025

"Botanically Inspired" features textile art by local artist Kirsten Chursinoff. Inspired by botanical gardens as well as the tenacious plants in overgrown lots, each embroidered quilt is intricately stitched using various techniques. Kirsten's work is composed of primarily repurposed textile scraps including waste fabric from quilts, thrums from weaving, and bits and pieces collected over the years.

Join us for the opening reception on May 8th, 4:30 - 6:30pm. Admission is free.
