Today Heritage St. Clair committee members installed the Erie and Huron Railway Station storyboard in Whitebread.

The Railway was crucial connection for communities.

Whitebread was a small settlement on Whitebread Line at Baseljne Road/Payne Road at the border of St. Clair Township and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

Representatives from St. Clair Township Council, the Heritage St. Clair Committee, along with family, friends, and community members gathered in Port Lambton this past weekend to mark the dedication of the John Herbert DeMars Memorial Bridge.

Today St. Clair Township dedicated the Marshy Creek/Bridge 45 just south of Port Lambton, as the John Herbert Demars bridge.

John was a long time clerk of the township and a great community supporter.

On hand was John’s family, St. Clair Township Councillors Cathy Langis and Pat Brown as well as Deputy Mayor Steve Miller and Mayor Jeff Agar and members of Heritage St. Clair.

A little local, quirky history!

Paul Morden from the Sarnia Observer caught our post about completing the Heritage Hamlet sign project.

He reported on the project when it began and was kind enough to reach out to do an article on the end of the project.

Local media is alive and well and we thank Paul and the Sarnia Observer for helping us promote the heritage of St. Clair Township!

The final 3!

Our Heritage Hamlet project is now complete.

You have probably noticed these beautiful black signs throughout St. Clair Township.

This was a project started a number of years ago and the signs mark 27 small settlements that were essential for residents.

Many were named for the postmaster or prominent citizen. With the advent of rural mail delivery many of these settlements disappeared.

Heritage St. Clair felt this was an important project to keep the memories of those who had the courage and conviction to make Moore and Sombra Townships a place to call home.

Huge thanks in you goes out to St. Clair Township Public Works for being so patient and helpful getting these signs installed for us.

Congratulations Dave Pattenden for being recognized for 15 years of dedicated work with Heritage St. Clair.

Heritage St. Clair Chairperson Tracy presented Dave with his Ontario Volunteer certificate and 15 year pin at tonights meeting.

Dave was unable to join Paul and Jan at the July 29 presentation and we wanted to pay tribute to him at his own little ceremony!
