The final 3!

Our Heritage Hamlet project is now complete.

You have probably noticed these beautiful black signs throughout St. Clair Township.

This was a project started a number of years ago and the signs mark 27 small settlements that were essential for residents.

Many were named for the postmaster or prominent citizen. With the advent of rural mail delivery many of these settlements disappeared.

Heritage St. Clair felt this was an important project to keep the memories of those who had the courage and conviction to make Moore and Sombra Townships a place to call home.

Huge thanks in you goes out to St. Clair Township Public Works for being so patient and helpful getting these signs installed for us.

Congratulations Dave Pattenden for being recognized for 15 years of dedicated work with Heritage St. Clair.

Heritage St. Clair Chairperson Tracy presented Dave with his Ontario Volunteer certificate and 15 year pin at tonights meeting.

Dave was unable to join Paul and Jan at the July 29 presentation and we wanted to pay tribute to him at his own little ceremony!

Mermaids & Mariners on the St. Clair, thank you for always sharing some great stories.

🕰 - Did you know the St. Clair River was quite active in the smuggling of booze during the prohibition in the US? 🥃🏴‍☠️ That's right! America was thirsty and 75% of the illegal liquor that entered the US crossed along this narrow waterway that separates the two countries...for 13 (painfully 😉) long years (1920-1933)! 🇨🇦🌊🇺🇸

Speaking of 13, Port Lambton was home to 13 beer scows--waterfront locations where beer and liquor could be loaded for shipment to the US. The alcohol made its way into the US limited only be the imagination, daring and greed of the suppliers. Think rowboats 🚣🏻, powerboats 🚤, iceboats ❄️, swimmers 🏊‍♂️, underwater pipelines 💦, airplanes ✈️ and cars on ice roads! 🚙🧊 Yep! If they could imagine it, they made it happen!
