On October 15th, join us as we delve into the impact of conflict on culinary culture, and the remarkable efforts of those who seek to preserve it.

We’ll be joined by two exceptional speakers:

🎙️ Michael Shaikh
Michael is a writer and human rights activist who has spent nearly two decades working in areas affected by political crisis and armed conflict. He has worked with the United Nations, Human Rights Watch, the International Crisis Group, and the Center for Civilians in Conflict. He is the author of “The Last Sweet Bite,” which won a 2026 James Beard Award for Literary Writing.

💬 In conversation with Kat Romanow
A key figure on Montreal's food scene, Kat is the Museum's Programming and Human Rights Coordinator, a Jewish food historian, and the founder of The Wandering Chew. Known for her work promoting culinary heritage (and as the creator of Fletchers' famous gefilte fish club sandwich!), she will explore how food is an integral aspect of understanding history and identity.

Join us on October 15 at 6:30 PM for a captivating discussion.

🎟️ Tickets ($10) and reservations required, https://museeholocauste.ca/en/news-and-events/book-talk-the-last-sweet-bite-stories-and-recipes-of-culinary-heritage-lost-and-found/

🍽️ What can a recipe preserve?

During her imprisonment in the Lippstadt concentration camp during the Holocaust, Edith Gluck collected nearly 200 recipes from memory and from her fellow inmates. She wrote them in pencil on scraps of paper, bound them with a piece of thread, and hid the booklet in the ground.

This was more than a collection of recipes. It was a way to preserve cultural heritage, memories, and a sense of humanity in the face of persecution.

Decades later, Edith’s story connects powerfully with Michael Shaikh’s The Last Sweet Bite, which explores how preserving food traditions can become an act of resistance and survival during times of persecution and forced migration.

📅 Join us October 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Goethe-Institut for a conversation with Michael Shaikh and Kat Romanow about food, memory, and human rights.

Today marks Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It’s a crucial moment to honour Indigenous Peoples, discover their rich cultures, and learn about their difficult history of persecution.

As a Canadian Museum dedicated to the Holocaust and its human rights legacy, it is essential for us to help promote awareness of the long history of discrimination and the ongoing injustices, including the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, against Indigenous Peoples in this country.

To learn more about residential schools and the enduring harm it caused Indigenous communities, we invite you to discover survivor testimonies at the Legacy of Hope Foundation, or watch our recorded discussion with Niigaan Sinclair and Sean Carleton, editors of Truth Before Reconciliation.
