Ce superbe spécimen violet provient d’Amherst, en Virginie (États-Unis). L’améthyste est en réalité une variété de quartz (SiO₂), colorée par des traces de fer et par son exposition à des radiations naturelles au cours d’un processus de formation qui a duré des millions d’années.

Le saviez-vous ? Le nom « améthyste » vient du grec amethystos, qui signifie « non ivre », car on croyait autrefois qu’elle protégeait contre l’ivresse !

This stunning violet specimen comes from Amherst, Virginia (United States). Amethyst is a variety of quartz (SiO₂), colored by traces of iron and by exposure to natural radiation during a formation process that lasted millions of years.

Did you know? The name “amethyst” comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning “not drunk,” because it was once believed to protect against drunkenness!

Creek 53: La nature en portaits

Creek 53 : La nature en portraits est une exposition qui rassemble 53 aquarelles originales et des poèmes de Chris Buddle, artiste, poète, écrivain et scientifique. L'exposition rend hommage à la faune et à la flore du bassin versant du Ruisseau 53 (Creek 53), une zone au cœur des efforts de conservation menés par la Fiducie de conservation du Ruisseau 53.

Creek 53: Portraits of Living Nature

Creek 53: Portraits of Living Nature is an exhibition that brings together 53 original watercolour paintings and evocative poetry by Chris Buddle, an artist, poet, writer and scientist. The exhibition celebrates the animals and plant life from the Creek 53 watershed, an area at the heart of ongoing conservation efforts by the Creek 53 Conservancy Trust.

✨🧫🦖 Cette année, le Musée Redpath a eu le plaisir de participer à un projet spécial alliant science et art : « Les microsaurines et la vie secrète du passé ».

Piloté par « Une école montréalaise pour tous », ce projet a réuni le musée, l’artiste visuelle Gabrielle Dagenais ainsi que deux écoles primaires de Montréal (CSSDM et CSSMB). Pendant quatre mois, 122 élèves et leurs enseignant·e·s se sont plongé·e·s dans le monde fascinant des fossiles, des dinosaures et des microbes. Ils ont participé à des ateliers scientifiques et artistiques et à une visite guidée sur les dinosaures afin de s'inspirer et de créer leurs microbes imaginaires, appelés microsaurines ! 🔍

Le projet a donné lieu à une exposition spéciale en avril, qui dévoilait la magie des microsaurines à travers une série de boîtes de Pétri dans la salle Dawson, accessible à tous. Les élèves et leurs enseignant·e·s sont venu·e·s au musée pour célébrer leurs réalisations. Merci aux élèves et aux enseignant.e.s !🎉

✨🧫🦖This year, the Redpath Museum had the pleasure of collaborating in a special project, which blended science and art: Microsaurites and the secrets of life’s past.

Spearheaded by A Montreal School for All, this project brought together the museum, visual artist Gabrielle Dagenais, and two local elementary schools (CSSDM and CSSMB). Over 4 months, 122 students and their teachers dove into the magnificent world of fossils, dinosaurs, and microbes. They participated in hands-on science and art workshops and a guided tour on dinosaurs in order to inspire and create their imaginary microbes, called microsaurites! 🔍

The project culminated with a special exhibit in April, capturing the magic of microsaurites in an array of petri dishes in the Dawson gallery for all to see. Students and their teachers then returned to the museum to celebrate their work. Thank you to all who participated! 🎉

Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, this day highlights the importance of biodiversity and calls on everyone to take action to protect it. 🌎💚

✨ What’s on the program:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Discover our family activities centered around the exhibition Creek 53: Portrait of Living Nature and take part in fun, interactive experiences in our Discovery Room.

🎥 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Come learn more about the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) organized by the United Nations Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity that is located in Montreal by watching a short video in our teaching laboratory and exploring their publications on site. The IDB 2026, “Acting locally for global impact,” is a call for us all to take action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Protecting biodiversity includes action close to home with positive ripple effects that can reach far beyond.

Proclamée par l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies, cette journée souligne l’importance de la biodiversité et invite chacun à agir pour la protéger. 🌎💚

✨ Au programme :

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 10 h à 12 h
Découvrez nos activités familiales autour de l’exposition Creek 53, la Nature en portraits et participez à des activités ludiques et interactives dans notre salle des découvertes.

🎥 13 h à 15 h
Venez en apprendre davantage sur la Journée mondiale de la biodiversité, organisée par le Secrétariat de la Convention sur la diversité biologique des Nations Unies, situé à Montréal. Visionnez un court film dans notre laboratoire d’enseignement et explorez leurs publications sur place.

La Journée mondiale de la biodiversité 2026, « Des actions locales à l’impact mondial », est un appel à nous tous à passer à l’action afin de freiner et d’inverser la perte de biodiversité. Protéger la biodiversité commence par des actions locales, dont les effets positifs peuvent se répercuter bien au-delà.

🦖 🌎🦴 Rencontrez le Gorgosaurus libratus : le prédateur du Crétacé !
Ce spectaculaire squelette trône fièrement au Musée Redpath. Mais qui était ce géant impressionnant ?

🔍 Quelques faits fascinants :

Le Gorgosaurus appartient aux tyrannosauridés, la même famille que le célèbre Tyrannosaurus rex.

Il vivait il y a environ 74 millions d’années, durant le Crétacé supérieur

En moyenne, il mesurait 8 mètres de long et pesait près de 2 tonnes !

Le squelette présentement au Musée Redpath est celui d’un adolescent, il était à environ 70% de sa grosseur maximale !

💡 Le saviez-vous ?
Gorgosaurus signifie « lézard féroce » en grec. Ses dents acérées et sa mâchoire puissante en faisaient un prédateur de premier ordre dans son écosystème.

This spectacular skeleton stands proudly in the Redpath Museum. But who was this impressive giant?

🔍 Some fascinating facts:

Gorgosaurus belongs to the Tyrannosauridae family, the same family as the famous Tyrannosaurus rex.

It lived about 74 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.

On average, it was 8 meters long and weighed nearly 2 tons!

The skeleton currently on display at the Redpath Museum is that of a teenager, which was about 70% of its maximum size!

Peu connue, la willémite est pourtant un minéral étonnant ✨ Ce silicate de zinc se distingue par ses teintes vertes ou jaunes, comme ces superbes spécimens de Franklin, New Jersey, une localité célèbre pour ses minéraux fluorescents.

Sous lumière UV, elle brille d’un vert éclatant !
Elle est aussi une importante source de zinc, utilisé en métallurgie et en industrie chimique.

Le saviez-vous ? La willémite doit son nom au roi Guillaume Ier des Pays-Bas.

Little known to the general public, willemite is nonetheless a truly fascinating mineral ✨ This zinc silicate is often found in green or yellow hues, like these beautiful specimens from Franklin, New Jersey—a locality famous for its fluorescent minerals.

Under UV light, it glows an intense green!
It is also an important source of zinc, used in the metallurgy and the chemical industry.

Did you know? Willemite is named after King William I of the Netherlands.

🦠🎨✨ Exposition spéciale : Les microsaurines et la vie secrète du passé
Plongez dans l'univers minuscule des microsaurines, des créations issues de l'imaginaire des enfants, où se mêlent science et art en une myriade de boîtes de Pétri. Ce projet, chapeauté par « Une école montréalaise pour tous », est le fruit d'une collaboration entre le Musée Redpath, l'artiste visuelle Gabrielle Dagenais et deux écoles primaires de Montréal.
Le projet touchant à sa fin, les élèves ont été invités à se rendre au musée afin de découvrir leurs créations en personne, d’échanger avec les autres et de faire la fête ! Venez regarder de près la magie des microsaurines exposées dans la salle Dawson. L'exposition sera présentée jusqu'au 30 avril. Aucune réservation requise.

🦠🎨✨ Special exhibit: Microsaurites and the Secrets of Life’s Past
Dive into the tiny world of microsaurites, imaginary creatures of childhood wonder, which blend science and art in a multitude of petri dishes. This project, spearheaded by “A Montreal School for All”, is the fruit of a collaboration between the Redpath Museum, visual artist Gabrielle Dagenais and two local elementary schools.
With the project coming to a close, students have been invited to come to the Museum to see their creations in person, share with others and celebrate! Come marvel at the magic of microsaurites up close at the entrance of the Dawson Gallery. The exhibit will be displayed until April 30th. No reservation required.
