Remembering Alfie Wade (1932-2026)

On February 6, we lost a legendary figure in the history of Montreal nightlife. Best remembered as a pioneering disc jockey and promoter in the 1960s at places like Don Juan, Le Drug and Vieux Rafiot (better known as Alfie’s), Alfie Wade grew up down the street from Rockhead’s Paradise, started the first Oscar Peterson fan club in the 1940s and studied piano with Daisy Peterson Sweeney. He came of age in the 50s alongside the generation’s most notorious artists and writers: Cohen, Roussil, Vittorio, and was a well-known fashion and nightlife icon covered in both the English and French media of the times.

ARCMTL had the privilege of conducting multiple interviews with Alfie in the last few years of his life. An edited transcript of an interview from June 2021, which chronicles his childhood and impressive career in Montreal up until the late 60s, is now available on our blog, nightsofmontreal.com (link in our bio).

ARCMTL x Expozine is thrilled to announce our third free zine-making workshop in the “Our Places, Our Stories” series, which delves into the music and nightlife history of Black Anglophone communities in Montreal! This next workshop will be taking place on April 10th, from 5:30-8:30 pm at the Black Community Resource Centre. With Montreal poet and performer Deanna Smith, we will play with the rhymes and rhythms of the 80s early hip hop scene. Participants will contribute their own verses to a collaborative zine, drawing inspiration from archival photographs, anecdotes, videos, and texts provided in the workshop.

ARCMTL x Expozine sont ravis d’annoncer notre troisième atelier gratuit de création de zine dans la série « Our Places, Our Stories », qui explore l’histoire de la musique et de la vie nocturne des communautés noires anglophones de Montréal ! Ce prochain atelier aura lieu le 10 avril, de 17 h 30 à 20 h 30, au Black Community Resource Centre. En compagnie de la poète-performeuse montréalaise Deanna Smith, nous jouerons avec les rimes et rythmes de la scène hip-hop des débuts des années 80. Les participants écriront leurs propres poèmes pour un zine collaboratif, en s’inspirant de photographies, d’anecdotes, de vidéos et de textes d’archives présentés lors de l’atelier.

Visite guidée de l’exposition Les histoires brodées de Lucie Kamuswekera

En partenariat avec l’ , Expozine vous invite à une viste guidée de cette exposition unique d’art mettant en lumière les œuvres puissantes de l’artiste congolaise Lucie Kamuswekera. 🇨🇩

Artiste pionnière dans un milieu dominé par les hommes, Lucie Kamuswekera, née en 1944 à Loutu, dans le Nord-Kivu en RDC, a grandi durant la fin de la colonisation belge et l’indépendance du Congo. En brodant des images sur des sacs en toile de jute usagés, ses œuvres interrogent la violence, l’exploitation des ressources naturelles et le rôle des femmes dans la résilience du Congo. L’exposition prend vie à travers les mots de l’artiste elle-même : « Je me suis mis à broder quand les gens ont commencé à mourir. » Ces mots résonnent profondément dans le cœur de l’exposition, soulignant le lien intime entre l’art et l’expérience humaine, même dans les périodes les plus sombres de l’histoire.
