Dazibao est un centre voué à la diffusion des pratiques actuelles de l’image. Dazibao favorise l’échange entre disciplines ainsi que les pratiques multidisciplinaires pour permettre le développement d’une façon autre de penser l’image et stimuler l’éclosion d’une manière nouvelle d’appréhender le réel. Dans un contexte où nombre de pratiques artistiques interrogent l’image au sens large, cette approche permet de s’intéresser à certains développements parmi les plus percutants de l’art actuel et favorise la poursuite d’une réflexion critique engagée. Dazibao is a centre dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary image-based practices. Dazibao promotes exchanges between disciplines and multidisciplinary practices to enable the development of other ways of thinking about the image and to stimulate the opening of a new way of grasping reality. In a context where we speak increasingly about the image within a wider framework, one that now extends over several art practices, this approach allows us to discern important developments within the contemporary arts and to engage in a more profound and critical reflection.

𝙷𝙾𝙼𝙴 réunit des textes de Karim Kattan, de Catherine Mavrikakis, de Kaitlyn Purcell, de Nina Yargekov et de France Choinière, éditrice de la publication, ainsi qu’une œuvre visuelle spécialement créée par Cindy Dumais pour habiter le cœur de l’ouvrage. La publication de Dazibao est disponible en galerie et sur la librairie en ligne.

𝙷𝙾𝙼𝙴 is a collection of literary essays by Karim Kattan, Catherine Mavrikakis, Kaitlyn Purcell, Nina Yargekov, and France Choinière, also the book’s editor, as well as a visual piece created expressly by Cindy Dumais to inhabit the heart of the book. The Dazibao publication is available in the gallery and in the online bookstore.

Cette sélection de courts métrages et de vidéos en boucle de Vijay Masharani met en séquence un glossaire d’images à la fois denses et disparates. Les divers usages que fait l’artiste des caméras de téléphone, de la vidéo 360 imparfaitement assemblée, du dessin au crayon et de l’animation 3D témoignent d’une indifférence à l’égard du spectacle technologique et des valeurs de production élevées. Gestuelles dans leur approche, les œuvres esquissent la question : sur quoi miser notre temps limité?

This selection of short films and video loops by Vijay Masharani sequences together a glossary of images that are both disparate and dense in meaning. The artist’s varied applications of phone cameras, partially stitched 360 video, pencil drawing, and 3D animation are indifferent to technological spectacle and high-production values. More gestural in their approach, the works outline the question: what is worth our limited amount of time?

La pratique de Tyson Houseman s’ancre dans le territoire et en est façonnée, privilégiant la durabilité tout en honorant les liens uniques de réciprocité qu’il entretient avec les terres où il intervient. Dans 𝐍𝐃𝐍 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞, quatre canaux vidéos évoquent les quatre points cardinaux, enveloppant l’espace de montagnes imposantes et d’arcus. L’eau coule; des mains récoltent des plantes médicinales. Accélérées, ralenties, inversées et floutées, ces images rappellent les formes mouvantes du temps selon une perspective cosmologique nêhiyaw : un temps diffracté, cyclique et indissociable de la terre, un temps profond et géologique, comme le mouvement de la conscience émergeant de la matière.

Tyson Houseman’s practice is land-based and land-informed, prioritizing sustainability while honouring specific reciprocal connections to the lands with which he engages. In 𝐍𝐃𝐍 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞, four video channels stand in for the four directions, surrounding the space with towering mountains and rolling clouds. Water flows; hands harvest medicines. Accelerated, decelerated, reversed, and blurred, these images contemplate time’s shifting forms from a nêhiyaw cosmological perspective: time as diffracted, as cyclical and inextricable from the land, as deep and geological, the movement of consciousness moving through matter.

(...) L’artiste ralentit cet excès, le reconfigurant en de longues séquences et en boucles ultracourtes qui se stabilisent en objets vidéos éternels. De même, Masharani déroge à l’aléatoire par la lisibilité lorsqu’il se filme en train de visiter des quartiers et des stations de métro. Ces lieux apportent une spécificité incarnée aux projets capitalistes, tels que la propriété, la privatisation, la gentrification et la répartition inégale de la visibilité et de la valeur. À ne pas confondre avec le concept de dérive qui serait désinvolte; son mouvement physique ou représentatif se montre plus ancré qu’aliéné.

[...] The artist slows such excess, reconfiguring it into long takes and ultra-short loops that stabilize into forever video objects. Similarly, readability overrides randomness when the artist documents himself visiting neighbourhoods and subway stations. These places give embodied specificity to capitalist projects like property, privatization, gentrification, and the uneven distribution of visibility and value. Not to be confused with a meandering dérive, his physical or representational movement is more acute than estranged.

(...) La famille constitue une autre forme que peut prendre le temps. Réalisées en collaboration avec les frères et le grand-père de Houseman, les images documentent des lieux à travers les Rocheuses, notamment les plaines Kootenay, la région d’Ermineskin Cree Nation et le site de camping familial en montagne. Nous guidant dans ces paysages, le grand-père de l’artiste, l’Aîné nêwoiyiwak Ken Roan, nous transmet que le temps n’existe pas. Seul existe l’espace entre les choses. Le temps ne se mesure pas par intervalles; il est l’intervalle de pause qui relie les éléments.

[...] Family is likewise a framework for time. Made collaboratively with Houseman’s brothers and grandfather, the images document sites across the Rockies, including the Kootenay Plains, Ermineskin Cree Nation, and the family’s mountain camp. Guiding us through these landscapes is the artist’s grandfather, Ken Roan, a nêwoiyiwak Elder, who imparts that there is no such thing as time. There is only the space between things. Time is not marked by intervals; it is the interval of pause that joins the elements.

Emma-Kate a rejoint Dazibao en 2018 au poste de coordonnatrice des expositions et des projets spéciaux. Dans ses fonctions, elle a contribué à de nombreux aspects des activités du centre, tout en y instaurant plusieurs initiatives. Travaillant en étroite collaboration avec les artistes à toutes les étapes de leur démarche, son approche privilégie l’écoute, la générosité, la communication et l’expérimentation. Sa connaissance appliquée de l’image en mouvement alimente ses échanges avec les artistes et l’exploration de potentiels formels et conceptuels. Cet investissement se traduit par une compréhension approfondie du mandat de Dazibao et de son rôle en constante évolution, depuis 1980, à Montréal, au Québec et à l’étranger.

Dazibao se réjouit à l’idée de s’unir avec sa communauté par ce nouveau cycle de programmation 𝘭𝘦́𝘨𝘦̀𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘦́𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦́.

Emma-Kate joined Dazibao in 2018 as exhibitions and special projects coordinator. In this position, she has been a contributor to, and initiator of, many aspects of Dazibao’s activities. Working closely with artists throughout the different stages of their process, her approach prioritizes attentiveness, generosity, communication, and experimentation. Informed by her applied experience with moving images, she is motivated by exchanges with artists that explore formal and conceptual potentials. This investment is reflected in a deepened understanding of Dazibao’s mandate and its evolving role since 1980 in Montreal, Quebec, and abroad.

Dazibao looks forward to connecting with its community through this new, 𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 programming cycle.
