Thinking of Someone, 2025
Huile sur toile | Oil on canvas
193 x 152.4 cm (76 x 60 ")

"Samuelle Grande sketches from memory at night, lying in bed, on the edge of sleep; those half dreamed drawings seed paintings that grow slowly afterward." - Excerpt from the exhibition text.

"There’s something about color situated in the painting. It’s situated now, It’s situated itself quite well. It’s a new thing, color is a new thing: Em’s notable silver and pink washes now meet something outside themselves. their orbits are permeable now “to what, color?” Yes as I’ve said, The color, it’s an intruder to these people, to me to you to em and maybe other people, maybe media or noise. perhaps we are the intruders the interruptions in the piece of their world. I most certainly am while I look at these girls and their memorabilia in ems studio. The memorabilia: all these wonderful lost records those girls like to listen to or hold these records the memorabilia no one knows where they came from or if they’re real but they’re in the world with those terrific girls who are looking like they’re in love." - Excerpt from the exhibition text by Allegra Harvard

“love”

to experience shifting illusions that are constructed as a way to deal with the post-haste terror of heartbreak. to lean on a newfound philosophy and see it through is to experience love, not necessarily with certainty but with a desire to understand and feel. it is represented here as pop art psychedelia that you have projected onto before and will again. you listen to that song that sends you through to the other side or was it— that movie, that book, that friend, that party? to also consider what portion of heartbreak is to remain private or intimate and explode any notions of it. to swallow the ache with this unknowing color that calls to me like a psychic vision. to be an artist that has to consider “love” for the first time.

We are pleased to celebrate the acquisition of Restitution Series (Buddha Heads) (2021) by Sameer Farooq into the collection of the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina.

The work consists of a reinforced plaster slab in which Farooq created impressions and reliefs of Buddha heads using positive and negative moulds and clay. By working with the trace rather than the object itself, the artist explores absence, displacement, and restitution within museum collections. Farooq has described this presence in relief as a way of allowing air to circulate around objects held in storage or displayed behind glass — a gesture of resuscitation.

Restitution Series (Buddha Heads) was presented at the MacKenzie Art Gallery as part of The Fairest Order in the World, Sameer Farooq’s exhibition organized by the Dalhousie Art Gallery and guest curated by Mona Filip, which continues its tour across Canada.

Ghazaleh Avarzamani's "Churn, Earn, Burn and then Return" curated by Mona Filip at Contemporary Calgary from June 4—November 8, 2026.

This exhibition acknowledges the conceptual contribution of Ali Ahadi, as part of the artistic collective, Freudian Typo, and his important role in the development of the works presented.

Churn, Earn, Burn and then Return is a seemingly playful environment comprising sculptures, textiles, illustrative images, text, found and archival objects. In this new installation, inspired by the Monopoly game, the stakes gradually emerge as more sombre. Cycles of labour, building up, exhaustion and repetition move through the space like rules of a game already in motion before the viewer arrives. Throughout the exhibition, each game token operates as an allegory of hierarchy, assigning value, status and movement. The familiar riding horse is replaced with a sardonic reference to the representation of the Prince of Wales and his horse at the British Empire Exhibition in 1925, where Canada famously presented a life-size butter sculpture of the royal in celebration of imperial power, directly linking the logic of Monopoly to the spectacle of territorial expansion, extraction and the gamification of ownership. Butter recurs throughout the exhibition as both material and metaphor: tied equally to the labour of churning and the volatility of churning markets, where instability, excess and collapse remain in constant circulation.

At a moment marked by large-scale political and economic shifts that often leave individuals feeling powerless, Avarzamani’s practice insists on the inherent possibilities of recognition. By making visible the systems that quietly organize daily life, her work opens a space for critical attention, disruption and refusal.
