🔎Last week's item: A Trouser Press

Made around the early 20th century by Everitt Press Manufacturing Co., Ltd., a London-based British company well known for producing quality mechanical trouser presses from at least the early 1900s through to the mid-20th century.

Their 'Globe Trotter' model was designed to be packed into luggage or kept in a hotel room or ship's cabin while travelling. The process was simple: fold your trousers carefully along the desired crease, lay them between the boards, tighten the screws firmly, and leave them overnight. By morning, your trousers would emerge perfectly pressed, with a crisp crease, a neat waistband, and tidy cuffs all at once. No heat and no electricity needed!

🔎Last week's item: A Dickie

A dickie (also spelled dickey or dicky) is a garment panel designed to replicate the appearance of a shirt's front, without the full shirt itself.

Consisting of a collar and a bib-shaped front piece, it is worn beneath a sweater, jacket, or blazer to create the polished illusion of a complete layered outfit, with considerably less bulk.

Dickeys trace their origins back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when they served as a practical solution for working-class individuals who wished to maintain a neat, professional appearance without the daily burden of laundering a full shirt.

Today, they're still seen as a versatile wardrobe staple, available in a wide range of styles from formal tuxedo-front panels to casual knit varieties, making them a functional and stylish choice for a variety of occasions.

🍓 Exhibit Opening Saturday, May 16!🍓

This May, join us for 'Strawberry Time at Mission', a new exhibit celebrating Mission's rich history of strawberry farming, presented jointly by the Mission Community Archives and the Mission Museum.

Through a curated mix of artifacts and archival images, 'Strawberry Time at Mission' traces Mission's agricultural story from its earliest days, when fruit was the crop of choice, through a pivotal chapter: the inaugural Strawberry Festival of 1946. Held on June 26, a day so significant it was declared a public holiday, the festival marked a landmark moment in the community's story.

This exhibit is brought to you by the Mission District Historical Society, the community organization that operates both the Archives and the Museum, made possible through generous support from the City of Mission, the Province of British Columbia, and private and corporate donors. The Society is committed to keeping Mission's history and heritage accessible to all.

🔎Last week's item: A Perpetual Calendar

This is a perpetual desk calendar: a manually operated device that displays the current day of the week, date, and month. Wooden k***s on either side allow the user to advance each of the three displays independently, scrolling printed cards or rollers behind small glazed windows. It is called "perpetual" because it carries no printed year, meaning it can be used year after year with nothing more than a daily adjustment by hand.

This example is cast in metal and decorated with flowers, leaves and an architectural pediment (the structure on the top). These elements are characteristic of the decorative style popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It makes no automatic allowance for months of different lengths or for leap years, leaving that entirely up to its user.
