๐Ÿบ Film Screening: Bad Coyote (2013) on Thursday, July 2 at 1:00 PM. ๐Ÿบ

Bad Coyote (2013), directed by Jason Young, is a documentary that investigates the fears in rural Maritimes after a fatal coyote attack in Cape Breton. As locals speculate about a new coyote, wolf โ€œsuper-species,โ€ the film questions whether the threat is real or fueled by fear and rumor. Presented in collaboration with the Haliburton County Public Library and National Film Board of Canada.

๐Ÿ๐ŸŒผ A wonderful way to wrap up the school year! ๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿ

๐Ÿฆ‹ Ms. Hicksโ€™ Grade 1 students from Archie Stouffer Elementary School visited the Cultural Centre for a special pollinator-themed field trip. Students learned about the importance of pollinators through hands-on activities and presentations from local experts.

๐Ÿ™ A huge thank you to the many experts who helped make this field trip possible. Students learned about plants and pollinators in our garden from Maureen of the Haliburton County Master Gardeners, explored fascinating insect displays and specimens with Baz of Haliburton Micromeadows Native Plant Nursery, and heard from representatives of The Land Between Charity about why pollinators are important and how we can help protect their habitats.

โ˜€๏ธ Best wishes to Ms. Hicks' class and all Archie Stouffer Elementary School students as they begin their summer break. We hope you have a fun and relaxing summer!

๐ŸŽ‰ A Full House for Local History on Kashagawigamog Lake! ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ‘ Thank you to everyone who attended our June 16 presentation with author Linda Lewis-Daly, hosted by the Haliburton Highlands Genealogy Group at the Cultural Centre.

Linda explored the history of tourism and resort development on the Kashagawigamog Lake Chain through her newly published book, sharing stories of the lodges, camps, hotels, and tourism organizations that once welcomed and still welcome visitors to the region.

Linda acknowledged the Haliburton Highlands Genealogy Group's research support and the contributions of community members whose memories and stories helped bring her book to life.

If you missed the presentation, you'll have another opportunity to meet Linda Lewis-Daly on Saturday, June 20 at Bookapalooza Haliburton Highlands with copies of Lodging Legacies: The Lost Cabins, Camps, and Lodges of the Kashagawigamog Lake Chain.

๐Ÿ“š The next speaker at the Cultural Centre will be outdoor enthusiast and local naturalist, Rick Whitteker on Thursday, July 16 at 5:00 PM. Rick will share insights into how exploring the regionโ€™s hiking trails and paddling routes deepens our appreciation of the natural heritage of Haliburton County. See you there!

Last week, the Minden Hills Cultural Centre hosted several sessions for residents at HHHS Hyland Crest Long-Term Care under the theme of Cross-Cultural Medicine!

๐Ÿฉบ Residents began by exploring the role of the rural doctor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when physicians often provided everything from general medical care to dental work. Artifacts from Dr. Agnes Jamiesonโ€™s collection, including an otoscope kit, stethoscope, dental mirror, reflex hammer, notepad, and medicine bottles, helped illustrate the many roles and responsibilities rural doctors carried within their communities.

๐ŸงดOur Program Coordinator, Robert, brought in a selection of traditional home remedies and Chinese medicines that he has personally used. Residents were invited to smell and examine medicated oils, ointments, herbal remedies, and cough medicines, taking part in a hands-on sensory experience while reminiscing about healthcare practices from earlier in their lives.

๐ŸŒฑ We were also pleased to welcome Jaime from the .ca and Holly from the Minden Junior Horticultural Club, who shared knowledge on local plants with traditional medicinal uses, including those commonly found in the area, like black walnut, raspberry, purslane, and dandelion.

๐Ÿ™ Thank you to the Hyland Crest staff for welcoming us and helping make this program possible. We always appreciate the opportunity to share history, culture, and lifelong learning with residents!
