Question to the group: What kind of content do you want?

This post is the most controversial post we ever published. And this is odd, because we've previously published this post. I see a lot of the comments are about nuance between Model D7 vs. MD7 and 17A vs. 17 A series. And one person has just written me "Don't you have anyone there who knows about equipment?" I encouraged him to address his criticism to the community and to the author of the post: Frank Rooney. I already responded to him our membership is largely composed of people who've been working with construction equipment for decades. And if he truly believed we're a bunch of fans instead of a bunch of experts, he should call out the association as such.

Pictured here is a 1957 Caterpillar Model D7 (17A series) equipped as a model 572 Side Boom Pipelayer.

In August 2000, this machine was generously donated to the Historical Construction Equipment Association of Canada by McNally Construction Ltd., Hamilton, Ontario, and is currently on static display at the Simcoe County Museum near Barrie, Ontario.

With 97.5 kW (130 hp) and with approximately 3,600 kilograms (8,000 pounds) of counter weight, this pipelayer’s lift capacity was rated at 24,000 kilograms (54,000 pounds). Utilized on major oil and gas pipeline construction sites across Canada, these specialized lifting devices also saw service in pipeline repair service and on related construction sites worldwide. Heavy lift capability combined with excellent stability and ease of quick relocation by float continue to make these machines the mainstay of pipeline contractors.

In addition to this piece of antique equipment, Patrick McNally, long time member of HCEA Canada and CEO of McNally Construction also arranged the donation of a 1950s era Caterpillar D6 bulldozer and most recently, a 1950 Link Belt Model 365 crane also on display at the Simcoe County Museum.

Pictured here, in November 1958, is a Bucyrus Erie 200W (Monighan) walking dragline at work stripping overburden at the Canada Cement (now Lafarge) plant near Woodstock, Ontario. This electric powered walking dragline, assembled on site in 1956, was equipped with a 4.6-cubic-metre (six-cubic-yard) bucket and 38.10 metres (125 feet) of boom. Utilized to remove over burden from the high quality limestone used in the cement making process this machine loaded a fleet of Euclid trucks until it was sold, dismantled, and shipped to a coal mine operation in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

Mr. Wally Meadows, of Woodstock, Ontario continued as the main operator on this machine until it was sold in the late 1970’s. A careful, knowledgeable and highly skilled hoisting engineer, Wally made operating the huge machine look easy. Although now retired, Wally continues his interest in vintage equipment offering his expertise to those involved in the restoration of antique construction equipment.

Pictured here is a 1957 Caterpillar Model D7 (17A series) equipped as a model 572 Side Boom Pipelayer.

Pictured here is a very early version of the popular Tractor Loader Backhoe. This gas-engine-powered 1958 Cockshutt Model 550 Tractor was on display at the August, 2009 Bruce County Historical Show held annually at Paisley, Ontario. This rare unit, still with original paint and owned by George and Bernice Frieburger was equipped with a Wagner Hydraulics Ltd. Loader/Backhoe combination affixed to the tractor and represents among the first of a series of transitions towards a dedicated tractor loader backhoe unit.

Cockshutt Tractor Ltd. had been a major manufacturer of agricultural equipment with a Canadian assembly and parts plant located in Brantford, Ontario, prior to this short lived foray into construction equipment manufacture.

Long before modern joystick controls and other operator comforts such as cabs these pioneers of the current tractor loader backhoe certainly filled a need and proved their worth on the construction sites of the 1950’s.

From Steam to Steel: The 100-Year Evolution That Built a Nation**

8,000,000 cubic yards of earth. That is the scale of the Panama Canal—and it was moved by the sheer, unyielding force of the early steam shovel.

At HCEA Canada, we don’t just look at old iron; we look at the mechanical DNA of our country. If you want to understand how Canada was carved out of the wilderness, you have to understand the evolution of the excavator.

Here is the data-driven history of how we moved from the 1830s steam giants to the WWII machines that changed the world.

# # # 1839: The Otis Revolution
Before 1839, excavation was a matter of picks, shovels, and human muscle. **William Otis** changed the math forever. His patent for the first "Steam Shovel" introduced a machine on a railway chassis that could move more earth in one day than 100 men.
* **The Tech:** A partial-swing boom powered by a massive vertical boiler.
* **The Limitation:** It was "chained" to the rails. If there was no track, there was no work.

# # # 1900–1920: The Power of Rotation & Tracks
The early 20th century saw two massive shifts that turned the "railway shovel" into the modern "excavator."
* **Mobility:** The invention of the **crawler track** (patented around 1901) liberated these machines from the iron rails, allowing them to traverse the boggy, uneven terrain of the Canadian Shield.
* **The 360° Pivot:** In 1925, the **Bucyrus 120-B** hit the market. It was the first heavy-duty shovel to offer full 360-degree rotation. This wasn't just a feature; it was a productivity multiplier.

# # # The Legend: The Erie Type B
By 1922, the **Erie Type B** became the industry standard. It was the "small but mighty" machine of its day.
* **Stats:** Roughly 20 tons of iron that built the foundations of North American infrastructure, including the famous Route 66 and early Canadian provincial highways.
* **Heritage Note:** We are proud to maintain a 1922 Erie Steam Shovel in our collection—a living testament to the engineering of the "Roaring Twenties."

# # # 1930s – WWII: The Death of Steam
By the mid-1930s, the writing was on the wall for steam. Internal combustion was more efficient, required less maintenance, and didn't need a constant supply of water and coal.
* **The Diesel Shift:** Simpler, cheaper, and faster. Diesel engines allowed for smaller, more versatile units.
* **The WWII Catalyst:** The war demanded rapid airfield construction and trenching. This era perfected the "backhoe" and saw the rise of names like Caterpillar and Bucyrus-Erie scaling up production to levels never seen before.

Pictured here is a J.D. Adams advertisement featuring a brand new Adams 550 Road Grader equipped with a V-plow and wing opening snowed in roads on the east side of Chemong Lake, Smith Township, Peterborough County, Ontario in March of 1958.

This Adams grader, manufactured in Paris, Ontario was powered by a Cummins NHC 4 diesel engine rated at 120 hp. Built prior to the era of hydraulic controls, it featured mechanical operator controls for all blade, plow and wing functions. Tough work usually in the worst of weather.

This photo shows former Adams road serviceman, John Hoover, checking operation of the newly delivered grader. John is a founding member and past president of the Historical Construction Equipment Association of Canada.
