Merrickville and District Historical Society

Merrickville and District Historical Society Merrickville is an attractive historic Village spanning the Rideau Canal between Smiths Falls and Kemptville.

The Historical Society was formed in 1965 to encourage an interest in the history and heritage of the Merrickville district and to protect its well preserved 19th century stone and masonry houses. Central to the Village and its history is the 1832 stone Blockhouse built to protect the canal locks and which we now operate in the summer as a Museum of local artifacts. The Merrickville and District H

istorical Society also maintains extensive archival material related to founding families and Village enterprises. We undertook an Archive Restoration and Preservation project during the summer of 2005. This is the first stage of several and thus far more than 1000 images have been photographed. The documents and pictures will eventually comprise a searcheable database which will be accessible for research.
