We invite those that have been traveling with Terrill Welch during her research and painting practice over the past two years to share your thoughts as well. Here are hers on this fine Saturday morning as she counts the number of weeks until completing her MA Fine Art degree…
‘In a working corner of my practice, three paintings cluster together. The top left is recently finished and the top right is from near the beginning of the seafloor series which now numbers 45 paintings, completed during the past two years. I look at the similarities between these two paintings and then think about how much my understanding and thinking has shifted through my theory application and practice-led research while my painting’s fingerprints remain constant and visible. I have moved closer to the seafloor both physically, intellectually and emotionally during this period of study. Yet, the first blush of intrigue holds over time. My southwest coast of Canada interpretation of shape, colour, texture and rhythm of the seafloor has a definable language in my first viewer’s experience of the work. However, when I stand in front of the easel today, I have a much clearer understanding of my specific historical reference in this reparative nature-centric painting practice. This is enough. More than enough for today.’ ~ Terrill Welch
