June Nineteenth, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the end of slavery and celebrates freedom. The name "Juneteenth" has been in use since the 1890s and marks June 19, 1865, the day when the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. This day celebrates freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

While Lucan Biddulph is best known for its connection to the Donnellys, the area's history began long before their arrival. In 1829, the Wilberforce Settlement became home to many black families seeking freedom and opportunity. As slavery and anti-black discrimination continued in the United States, Black settlers from Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as Albany, Rochester, New York, Boston, and Baltimore, journeyed north to Canada in search of safety and a better future. Lucan Biddulph offered these families a place to build new lives, free from the threat of slavery and the racial violence and anti-black riots that were occurring in many American communities.

Discover the legacy of the Wilberforce Colony and more at the Lucan Area Heritage & Donnelly Museum.

Our Poppy Project has been a huge success! With the help of our partners at the Lucan Library, we have surpassed our goal of 1111 knitted poppies to decorate the Lucan Legion for Remembrance Day. We've now adjusted our goal to reach 1111 more for the Granton Cenotaph. If we surpass that, the remainders will decorate the Museum, Library, and other participating buildings. If you want to contribute, reach out to us or the wonderful folks at the Library!

June is a month where we take time to celebrate the history of two communities whose resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity is astounding. Pride Month and Indigenous History Month have an interesting cross-section in the Two Spirit identity, though it is far more complex an idea than often understood from individuals outside of indigenous communities. We took a moment today to learn more about it.

We are excited that at long last Middlesex County is considering an archive! The tenacity and passion of the Committee to Establish a Middlesex County Archives can't be overstated. If you feel that Middlesex should invest in an archive to help protect the county's heritage. Take a moment to fill out this survey.

Share your thoughts 🧠

We’re conducting a feasibility study to assess the potential costs, resource needs, governance structures, and operational requirements of an archival service in Middlesex County. We need your input to help inform future decision-making.

Complete the survey by June 15, 2026. ➡ bit.ly/3RBP3bu

We're deep in Leaf Country, but we have a special connection to the Montreal Canadiens here in Lucan. In 1952 the Montreal Canadiens played an exhibition game against our very own Lucan Irish Six! This meant our local boys taking the ice with legends such as Maurice Richard, Bernie Geoffrion, Doug Harvey, and Elmer Lach. In 2022 we were fortunate enough to receive and display a stick from the game autographed by all of those hockey legends. Come visit and learn the story of how this magical event came to pass! And for maybe one night here in Leafs Land we can say Go Habs Go! 🔵⚪🔴
