: After she completed high school, Marion Robertson, from Elora, Ontario, enrolled at Guelph’s Macdonald Institute where she completed a course in nursing.

During WWI, Marion was among more than 2000 Canadian women who joined the Red Cross Society’s Voluntary Aid Detachment, a nursing corps attached to military hospitals.

In 1918, she joined the staff at the Toronto Military Orthopedic Hospital, later known as the Christie Street Veterans Hospital, where she aided in the treatment and recuperation of Toronto’s wounded veterans and would meet her future husband, Captain Frederick Banting.
