Today is ! At Banting House, we are using this day to celebrate Dog 33, aka, Marjorie, aka, "the most important dog in the world."
When Frederick Banting and Charles Best were conducting research to find a treatment for diabetes, they used dogs as test subjects. Banting formed a particular attachment to Marjorie who survived the longest on Banting and Best's treatment.
Banting wrote at length in his unpublished memoir about his conflicted emotions when the dogs died as a result of the lab work, but dogs like Marjorie helped prove to the medical world that insulin was ready to move forward to human trials.
The dog days are over for those living with diabetes thanks to dogs like Marjorie. Here's to all the dogs that save our lives everyday!
