🪵 Feature Artist Friday — Shawn of Green Hedge Creations
This week we're shining a light on Shawn, one half of Green Hedge Creations, whose beautiful wood-turned bowls and mixed media sculptures you'll find in the shop.
Shawn got his first taste of woodturning in Grade 7 shop class and returned to the craft as an adult. Many of his pieces are "twice turned" — after rough-turning a chunk of log, he sets it aside to dry and "do what wood does" for at least a year before turning it a second time to refine its final shape. After sanding, each piece is finished with a food-safe hard wax oil. As Shawn likes to say, the wood tells him what it wants to be, so the design can change right on the lathe if the wood has other ideas!
Now residing on 26 acres of woods, he's never short on material. When he's not turning, Shawn creates 3D mixed media sculptures from found rock, metal, and wood, each one inspired by the natural world.
