These photos feature the Lake Cowichan Earth Station on its official opening on September 26, 1972, as well as a few on an unspecified date. The Lake Cowichan Earth Station was part of the Telesat Domestic Earth Station Network, a national communications satellite system built in the early 1970s. It enabled communication transmissions across Canada by receiving communications from satellites and feeding this information into telephone, television, and radio networks.

Canada was the first country to develop such a system using geostationary satellites. There were ten stations initially built, Lake Cowichan being one of them. Lake Cowichan's station was the "western anchor," one of 2 "heavy route" stations designed for large volume traffic—the other being Allan Park's station in Ontario.

Only the heavy route stations were staffed (Lake Cowichan's was staffed by about 20 engineers and technicians) and were much bigger than the other stations, with 98 foot satellite dishes rather than the 30 foot dishes at other sites.

Rumour had it that this station put a target on Lake Cowichan during the Cold War. The station has since been decommissioned.

Happy Family Heritage Days! The Kaatza Station Museum & Archives have been working on making our materials more accessible. We have now added 7 IWA newspapers to our collections on the digital repository Arca, including the locally produced IWA Local 1-80 Bulletin and Local 1-80 Woodworker’s Review. View our whole collection here: bchdp.arcabc.ca/ksma. These newspapers are entirely searchable, making them a valuable resource.

In addition, we are actively adding historical photos to our website at this link: kaatzamuseum.pastperfectonline.com/Photo. This is a work in progress as we have many many more photos on the way. We have done our best to make the photos searchable. Try searching your family surname and see if any photos pop up!

If you have any questions about the above resources, please get in touch with us at [email protected].

Help needed,

The Kaatza Museum is currently undergoing some changes with new exhibits and has run into a roadblock. In one of the rooms where a new exhibit is planned to open in May there is a large saw from the Western Forest Industries mill. It is 82 inches in diameter and .25 inches thick, it likely weighs in the range of 300-400lbs (but it will feel heavier due to the size and angles needed to move it).

We are looking for a volunteer team of contractors (or individuals experienced in moving large objects etc.) who are insured and are willing to come by and help relocate the saw from the room it currently is in into another one and mount it to that wall (it is only held up by a few screws and is resting on a block of wood to reduce weight on wall).

If you are able and willing, please come by the museum at check it out in person to get an idea of what would be needed and where it needs to go. We would like this done before May if at all possible.

The museum is open 10am-4pm Mon-Fri to drop by, but if you would like to take a look earlier, contact the museum.

Thank you.

Thank You to all who contributed their stories and family history to the South Asian Heritage Exhibit project. The information provided has been reviewed and included where appropriate to the exhibit presentation and we are excited to show you everything following the opening of the exhibit (to be shared at a later date).

If you have stories you would like to share and missed this window, please reach out to us. While it may not make it into the exhibit, it will be entered into our South Asian history section for reference and preservation so that if a future display or research project is done there will be additional reference material to pull from.

Once again Thank You for your contributions. The community response has been amazing and we hope you like the exhibit once it opens.

The Kaatza Historical Society Annual General Meeting for 2026 is set for March 17th, at 1pm at the Bell Tower School (the building behind the Kaatza Museum).

All are welcome and encouraged to attend to see what the society has been up to and is planning for the future. We are in a period of transition following our 50th anniversary last October. New members (including open positions on the executive board), new volunteers, new ideas, new energy. This is all welcome.

So whether you are a multi-generation local or someone new to the area and are interested in the rich history the Cowichan Lake area has to offer and would like to contribute to its continued preservation, stop by and check us out.

Membership dues if becoming a member (or an existing member) are also due the day of the AGM. $20 for the year with no obligations ($35 for a multi-person membership), but if you'd like to volunteer we'd be happy to see you and have plenty of ongoing and future projects in the works.

Thank you.

This photo (P983.3.1) depicts the Camp Boarding House in around 1927-1928, which was owned and operated by Oscar Rundquist and his wife and which offered room and board to single loggers.

They had 3 children--Eric, Margaret, and Rudolf. The young man holding the dog is John Matson. Victor Rundquist, Oscar's brother and operator of the White Star stage that ran from Lake Cowichan to Duncan, is standing behind the three women--Margaret on the left and Mrs. George Goranson and Mrs. Andy Anderson, who were employed by the Rundquists.

No longer in existence, the boarding house would be where Fern Road is today, below and behind the St. Louis de Montford Catholic Church.
