The online art community has been saying “Make Art even if it’s bad!” and I LOVE this (it helps me when I’m in a creative slump) but I want to take it one step further.

Ask yourself: Why do I think my art is B A D?

Is it because you don’t have formal art education?
Is it because your creative skills don’t match a set style?
Is it because you’ve been looking at your project for so long that you hate it?

Take two steps back.

Who told you that your art was bad?

Last night my nephew drew lines and scribbles on a paper placemat at a restaurant as a gift for my daughter and I wish I kept it. We praise children for their art endlessly to boost their confidence and I loved the art that he made, it was loose and playful and screamed fun loving child. But if I had kept it and he saw it in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, would he think it’s as good as the day he drew it? Probably not. But I would.

If you create something with your own two hands and promptly hate it, put it aside until you uncover it in the future and you’ll have a different opinion on it.

And if someone tells you it’s bad? That’s their unwanted opinion. Everyone is different and everyone’s art tastes are different.

Make the ‘bad’ art because YOU made it. But remember that someone else loves that art even if you don’t.
