Union Gallery reopens one week from today!

Here's a sneak preview of ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ'๐˜ด ๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜บ?, a research-creation work by 3rd-year Philosophy and Sociology student Renee Lebeau, which will be featured in the Main Space starting June 9 โœ‚

"I created this collage to visualize how colonial violence continues to shape the present, even when it is often treated as something confined to the past. Through layered materialsโ€”including magazine clippings, newspaper articles, and paintโ€”I explore how institutions like the criminal justice and child welfare systems obscure their colonial foundations by framing harms such as residential schools and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) as isolated events rather than part of an ongoing structure.

As I assembled the piece, I became increasingly interested in the relationship between time, memory, and power. The fragmented and overlapping layers reflect how colonial histories are never fully separate from the present but continue to shape lived realities. I was drawn to the tension between what is made visible and what remains hiddenโ€”how some narratives are emphasized while others are buried beneath institutional language and ideas of reconciliation.

By reworking found materials, I wanted to interrupt familiar narratives and encourage viewers to look more closely at how colonial structures remain active and normalized in everyday systems. Creating this piece also prompted me to consider resistanceโ€”not only as opposition, but also as remembrance, refusal, and the assertion of alternative futures."

Regular hours resume June 9 and will continue all summer long! Come visit Tuesdayโ€“Saturday, 11amโ€“4:30pm, with late hours til 8pm on Wednesdays.

GHY Cheung is a Hong Kong-born artist and writer. Across his practice, he attends to q***r bodies in the built environment, looking in particular to histories of cruising across Hong Kong, Katarokwi-Kingston and Ottawa.

GHY has been a longtime collaborator with Union Gallery as an artist and writer, and we're delighted to have him back on the team. 10 days to go until our doors reopen for the summerโ€”we hope you'll come see what we have in store!

Worlds World Worlds takes its title and conceptual grounding from Donna Harawayโ€™s phrase โ€œit matters what worlds world worlds,โ€ and responds to Union Galleryโ€™s curatorial theme, Living Together, by focusing on collaboration, coexistence, and solidarity in times of intersecting crises. Through collage, the exhibition aims to explore how images construct our understanding of reality, and how shifting those images might shift perception itself.

Meet the one and only Jasper Lyon Wicke, who will be joining us this summer as UG's artist in residence through the Public Art Mentorship Program ๐ŸŒฑ

Jasperโ€™s art focuses on representing plants, animals, and humans in harmony. She loves attempting to make her dreams come to life through sewing, drawing, printing, painting, woodworking, and any other medium she can get her hands on. Jasper enjoys playing with many layers of meaning, using visual metaphors and simple motifs alike to get an idea, concept, or message across. She strongly believes that environmental justice and community are intrinsically linked to our collective liberation and tries to represent this in her work. Whether at a protest, wandering in the forest, or relaxing in a cozy place, Jasper is always thinking creatively and critically in an attempt to understand and learn about the wonderful, complicated world we live in.

Jasper has previously been involved with Union Gallery as a youth artist in Home Sweet Home, a summer 2024 exhibition curated by Re Parsons and presented in collaboration with Youth Imagine the Future Festival. We're so excited to welcome Jasper back to the gallery for a summer of art making and skill sharing!

We're delighted to (re)introduce Abby Nowakowski, who will be joining us this summer as a mentor for the Public Art Mentorship Program ๐Ÿฃ

Abby Nowakowski is a q***r interdisciplinary artist and arts educator based in the wetlands of Central Frontenac between the Mississippi and Tay River watersheds. In their practice, they are constantly questioning how their artwork can be used as an activist tool and contribute to the collective creative building of sustainable futures. Abby explores themes of transformative justice, belonging, and hopefulness. Learning lessons from the natural world, Abby often leans towards local flora and wildlife as powerful examples of community building and resistance.

Abby is also our former Program Director and a member of the UG Board of Directors! We are so grateful to be working with them again and are looking forward to a wonderful summer of creativity, care, and skill-sharing.

Quick, while she's busy grant writingโ€”everybody say "Yay, Morgan!" ๐Ÿ’›

UG's Gallery Director, Morgan Wedderspoon, won the J. Ross McKenzie Award for Mentorship for 2026, and we couldn't be prouder of her!

This Kingston & Area Association of Museums, Art Galleries & Historic Sites Award of Excellence goes to a mentor who demonstrates an exemplary commitment to the cultural heritage sector by enthusiastically and respectfully sharing their expertise, skillset, and knowledge in a mentorship capacity; shows eagerness to invest in others, willing to be a sponsor/ally, to share and create opportunities for success and growth both personal and professional; gives honest and productive feedback; supports and mentors others with challenges or issues that they may be experiencing; and values reflective listening and empathy.

We couldn't think of a better recipient! Here are some Morgan highlights from the past couple of yearsโ€”tending to the gallery garden, demonstrating principles of art education to future teachers, meeting with UG's student-led programming committee, and doing the slow, careful, and deeply worthwhile work of hand-writing exhibition didactics as a more ecologically sustainable alternative to vinyl.

Thank you, Morgan, for everything you do!

๐Ÿ”จ We have a selection of basic hardware and tools (drill, drywall screws, nails, hammers, sticky tack, Phillips screwdriver, small magnets). You are welcome to bring additional hardware and tools, and we may be able to accommodate special requests if made early enough.

๐Ÿงฑ Artists are responsible for install, deinstall, and patching holes made in the gallery walls (tools and spackling provided). We ask that you set aside at least 15 minutes at the end of your session to return the gallery to its original state for the next artist.

๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™€๏ธ If you need assistance, you are welcome to bring a friend!
