Kentville Historical Society

Kentville Historical Society Strengthening the historical and cultural appreciation and knowledge of the Town of Kentville.

Since the opening of Kentville’s Heritage Centre in May of 2019, many dedicated volunteers help to operate seasonally from May through to October. The Centre is the headquarters of the Kentville Historical Society that was founded in 2017, and houses many photographic displays and artifacts from Kentville over the past century. Additional exhibits include the Dominion Atlantic Railway, Sports in K

entville, and a rotating exhibit that usually changes each year. This year, we are pleased to bring back our Kings County Academy exhibit that features yearbooks dating back to the 1930s, old photographs, and more! Our monthly General Membership meeting is open to the public every other month, that includes guest speakers who share insights into local historical events in and around Kentville. The Kentville Historical Society is passionate about keeping Kentville’s rich history alive and preserving the heritage of the once “Shire Town of Kings County”. “Apple Blossom Festival Children’s parade float is pictured here in Kentville, N.S. circa early 1940s passing by the front entrance to the Cornwallis Inn.

Caption states that the Apple Blossom Festival still had good financial support despite the tough, demanding, challengingly, economic times during the Second World War.

I remember my father telling me long ago that they also called the children’s parade “the doll parade” which was usually held in the morning before the grand street parade in the afternoon.

This photo and caption information is courtesy of Kentville Historical Society.”

Thank you to everyone who attended our speaker event last Thursday evening! We were delighted to welcome Allison Magee, who brought along his wonderful collection of Nova Scotia glassware for an engaging and informative presentation.

Guests enjoyed seeing the many different patterns of both water and wine glasses, and it was especially interesting to see how small wine glasses were compared to today’s styles! Several attendees even brought pieces from their own collections for Allison to help identify and determine whether they may have been made by Nova Scotia glass manufacturers.

Between 1881 and 1917, three major glass manufacturers operated in Nova Scotia, producing beautiful and unique pieces that continue to spark interest today. Allison’s wealth of knowledge made for a fascinating evening, and we appreciate everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion.

Stay tuned for details on our next speaker meeting happening in July!

“This 1919 A.L. Hardy photo shows apple pickers picking Golden Russets in the Canning, N.S. area. This photo sure looks like the North Medford area where I picked apples for 30 years. This photo is from the 2004 Kings County Museum Historical Photo Calendar and is courtesy of Kentville Historical Society.”
